Mostly Sunny Week Ahead

junjul.jpg

It's the beginning of the month, time to break out ye olde updated cumulative rainfall graph. June and July, thanks to a late surge during the latter, was the second wettest June-July combo ever recorded in Central Park. Less than five inches of rain, the normal is 4.22, needs to fall this month for 2009 to be the rainiest summer ever. However, a rainy two month stretch is no guarantee of a third wet month. The rain-soaked June-July of 1975 was followed by a dry August, and the very dry start of summer in 1999 rebounded with nearly normal rainfall the next month (followed by a wallop from Floyd that September).

No rain is expected today or tomorrow. A high pressure system is in control. Enjoy mostly sunny skies and a high in the mid 80s today and upper 80s Tuesday.

A slow moving cold front should approach the city on Wednesday. That disturbance will upset the sky gods, who will express their displeasure by unleashing rain upon us mere mortals. Wednesday's high may reach 90 degrees before the rain arrives. Clear skies and highs around 80 should prevail for several days following the front's passage.

Wow. Joe, most weather comments EVER?

They don't call it "Global Warming" anymore, they have changed tghe jargon and are calling it *Climate Change,* because the Earth has been slowly cooling since about 1998.

  • Joe Schumacher

The whole "global warming" vs. "climate change" terminology debate is really interesting.

The switch to "climate change" was suggested by Republican PR guy Frank Luntz in 2002 because it makes the issue sound less certain and dire. Making the issue sound less serious than it is, Luntz argued, would make it easier for Republicans to block legislation to limit CO2 emissions. Luntz has since become convinced that climate change is a problem that needs to be taken seriously.

  • Shinobi Shaw

Interesting, because top "Global Warming" advocates are calling it "Climate Change" now and been calling "Climate Change" for a while. I don't see how the "Republicans suggestion" of the name change could lead such influence toward the advocates of "climate change" themselves.

They had to change the jargon because as I said before Earth has been COOLING since 1998, slowly but surely.

It's not false, just look at the unbiased-nonpartisan research and the studies.

  • Politburo

Thanks for that. I always assumed the switch to 'climate change' was simply because it was a more accurate term.

  • Dead Himmler

"Climate change" is a smart name to call it. The climate is always changing hence it can never be wrong. I bet a fancy PR firm recommended the name change. What a farce.

  • Politburo

    False.

  • ohhleary

Uh, Hugo was in 1989, not 1999. Do you mean Floyd?

  • Joe Schumacher

    Thanks! I fixed the post.

It's cool in the northeast, but it's one small area on earth. Comparing the northeast or NY weather this summer is nothing compared to the land mass of earth.

  • Joe Schumacher

It's too soon for the July global numbers to be out yet, but the preliminary June analysis shows that this past June was the second warmest June ever. The first six months of this year are the fifth warmest Jan-June on record.

  • @spnder: No kidding. Global warming clearly means "every single day is hotter than the day before, everywhere." If that doesn't happen, well — obviously global warming's a hoax.

  • spnder

Who are these people that think "Global Warming" means that everywhere literally gets hotter?

  • John_Matrix

much of the rest of the country is under a massive drought right now.

  • JacqueMehoff

hopefully it will be a good day for the start of summer streets. last year was perfect.

  • jamieob256

I think the people in the state of Washington would disagree that there is no global warming. They have had record-breaking heat this summer.

  • Trilby16

They also had lots of snow last winter which almost never happens. Go figure. I think that global warming is resulting in upset weather patterns, but what do I know!

  • Dead Himmler

I used to be a believer in global warming but after this summer there is no way its happening. People really jumped the gun on this one.

  • nicemarmot

I used to believe most people knew global warming didn't literally mean everyplace got hotter, but after this summer I've realized most people are dipshits.

  • Dead Himmler

Why do you think they call it GLOBAL warming you moron.

  • nicemarmot

    ...and proof of the point.
