More About Oreo, The Dog Who Survived Throw From Roof

2009_07_oreodog.jpg Everyone is rooting for Oreo, the 1-year-old dog that was allegedly thrown off the roof of a Brooklyn housing project by a 19-year-old. The Daily News says its readers have been emailing, asking if the dog has been adopted yet; one hopeful reader wrote, "Oreo surviving was an absolute miracle and we believe she survived for a reason and would love to help raise her in a loving home. [We] have a big yard for her to run around in."

ASPCA Special Agent Joseph Pentangelo told the News, "We have to get her squared away medically first because even though she's had surgery on her front legs, I'm not sure that's going to be the last. She's young and we are hopeful. But it's one step at a time at this stage... She's showing a lot of resilience. She's eating on her own. She's standing. She is walking. But I don't want to be premature." He also added, "There are plenty of animals - she's one of them - that definitely need help." According to the Post, it's believed that Oreo's fall was slowed by AC units at the Red Hook Houses (Oreo's four limbs were still shattered).

As for man accused of throwing Oreo off the roof, Fabian Henderson, 19, pleaded not guilty to charges of animal cruelty, reckless endangerment and criminal trespass. The Post reports, "The complaint against Henderson also notes that Oreo's skin was infected around her stomach and armpits, suggesting he mistreated her before tossing off the roof." He is being held on $50,000 bail.

Here's the ASPCA's adoption database for NYC. This week's pet of the week is the adorable Meatball, a pit bull who was originally adopted from the ASPCA by a NJ family; unfortunately the family lost its home and Meatball is looking for a new home.

hmmmmm armpits on a dog...didn't realize they had arms

Wow some winners on here.... yes dogs have arms/legs/armpits just like you. They also bleed and break limbs when thrown off a roof. Bad dog? ? Address? ... giving him a personal visit for sure. This scum needs to be wiped out ASAP.

Did anyone involved in this story ever think that maybe just MAYBE the dog was a bad dog?? He looks awfully guilty in this photo. People should really edukate themselves on the full context of the story BEFORE commenting.

I think the dog looks awfully scared.

Even if the dog misbehaved, there's no reason to treat a living thing in such a way.

This guy would probably do worse to a human being.

Trust me,
Fabian Henderson will be heard from again.

Full context of the story? You don't even seem to know that Oreo is a female, omniscient one. Like you wouldn't be looking terrified if somebody threw you off a roof, breaking all your limbs and you had to undergo surgery and lots of pain medication.

How about this for context? The kid has been arrested for robbery before. He was given a summons for walking a dog matching Oreo's description without a leash only days before. He first admitted to throwing the dog off then recanted and claimed she jumped. No remorse in that one. That's plenty of context for me.

your sarcasm detector appears to be broken. Dead Himmler is joking.

I can recognize well-formed sarcasm just fine. If this was sarcasm, it is poorly done. Where's the grain of truth that makes it relevant. Maybe you should tell supernova and brooklynbobby that they also need a sense of humor.

Dead Himmler, are you as stupid looking as you sound? I'm betting yes.

Personal insults are the lowest form of wit. It takes hardly any intelligence at all.

Yes, but more intelligence than you have, MORON!

love the "pet of the week" idea!

At least in the midst of such crass news,
and always present snarky & pretentious yet totally vapid comments,
there is actually a morally relevant use of this blog.

Let's not about self-righteous, equally pretentious dribble wafting from those deluded enough to believe that blogs are meant to be objective.

Poor puppy, though.

Objective?! no way....as a minimum decent. But i guess that is even a very high expectation, in a site and a city where victims are seen as the bigger suspects and objects of public offense. Keep up cynicism as the closest thing to rational thinking, even-though is a totally a priori judgement.

There's no such thing as bad dogs, only bad dog owners who make them bad. I rescued my dog from an abusive home, spent 6 months rehabilitating him daily and he's the most loving (& grateful) dog I've ever met. And he did not have an evil bone in his body. He was petrified of everyone when we got him. Poor Oreo does indeed look very scared. It's going to take a loving home to help her trust people again. I'm going to say it again, throw that bastard off the 6th floor & see how he feels.

Oreo looks so sweet and so scared in the photo. No animal deserves to be treated like this. I hope Oreo finds the loving home she deserves.

What kind of sick person would throw a dog off a roof? Much, much harsher penalties are needed for cases of animal cruelty. I hope the sick a**hole that did this rots in jail.

"What kind of sick person would throw a dog off a roof?"

It was in a housing project. Take a wild guess!

He should be thrown off the roof... I volunteer to push him...

Dude really does need to be thrown off of a roof, but ideally one higher than a one story building. I'm thinking more like a 10 story.

No wait, Empire State Building.

Yeah, that'll do.

I wouldn't shed a tear if the guy who did this was tossed off the same building. People who abuse those who cannot defend themselves make me sick.

As someone who walks dogs I see so many people abusing there dogs when out walking. Yelling, tugging etc. Why do you own a dog!!!!????

I keep the ASPCA and Animal Care number in my phone.
People should be arrested and jailed for hurting animals.

To the (mercifully) who posted in what can only be called "sewer humor" - it's not a funny story by any stretch of the imagination.

I hope Fabian is convicted and put into a cell with a bunch of very large animal-loving men who have been incarcerated long enough to recognize "fresh meat" when they see him and do the necessary.

That was supposed to be to the (mercifully) few . . . .

First I'll glad Oreo is doing good and survived the fall. And I'm glad those who saw it happen call and get the dog help. I have a dog that looks a lot like Oreo. She is the sweetest dog. I hope Oreo does find a loving home. She does look like a great dog.
