Oreo the dog, who survived a terrible fall, is recovering
This is amazing (and sad): A one-year-old black-and-white terrier mix was apparently thrown off a Brooklyn apartment building—and survived. Neighbors called the ASPCA about the dog, who took her to a vet. The pup, named Oreo for her coloring, then underwent surgery at the ASPCA hospital, where vets repaired all of her limbs "with plates and screws. She also suffered internal bruising and damage to her lungs," according to the Post.
It's believed that Fabian Henderson, 19, threw the dog off the roof of the Red Hook Houses on June 18. The Daily News reports, "The ASPCA initially received a complaint that an animal was being beaten on the third floor of 28 W. Ninth St., where Henderson lives with his family... A few minutes later, the ASPCA got two more calls from people reporting a dog had been thrown off the roof." Henderson, who was arrested after the ASPCA conducted two weeks of interviews, allegedly admitted that he threw the dog off the roof but then said the dog jumped (witnesses say he threw the dog).
Henderson was charged with aggravated animal cruelty as well as trespassing (the roof) and reckless endangerment (because the dog could have hit someone on the ground). Henderson's mother claimed that she had never seen the dog before, telling the News, "I was surprised that he got arrested for that. He's basically a quiet person, good with animals," and she told the Post, "He is around the dog"—referring to their family dog Diamond—"all the time, and he has shown no signs of abuse with the dog or any family member."
As for Oreo, ASPCA Special Agent Joseph Pentangelo said, "She is healing, but it is a long road ahead." And here's the ASPCA's tips on how to spot animal cruelty.

Does anyone happen to know if this poor guy is up for adoption? I would gladly take him.
This is sad and tragic, as someone who is a transplant to NYC (from Chicago) it amazes how easy it is to adopt a pit bull. As the owner of one these dogs I can say they arent for everyone but if trained and socialized properly these dogs make for the most loyal of companions. If they are left in the hands of an incompetent kids/adults watch out. I feel bad for the dog as for the kid there are some underlying deeper issues. This kid needs to see a shrink not a jail cell.
Vino, I'm not sure, but I imagine Oreo may be up for adoption after some more recovery time...
In the mean time, I just saw this on the ASPCA blog—this sweet, rehabbed pit bull needs a home (apparently the NJ family that took him in lost their home, so had to return him to the ASPCA).

Teen is misleading. He is a 19 year old man who should be put away and not allowed to collect any more assistance from our government. 19 years of support for this creature was enough of a gift from all of us.
I'm must curious, but where did you read that he was on public assistance?
Regardless, this guy is messed up. Is this a city-owned building? The Post notes that he has a prior robbery "arrest," but not a conviction. Hopefully he will be forced to take a conviction on this one, and be barred from living in a city-owned building.
I also noticed that his girlfriend is 16. Maybe there is a statutory rape charge that could be added on, just for the hell of it.
He lives in Red Hook Houses, a public housing project. Cut him and his family off.
Yup, he lives in the projects(Red Hook Houses per the article). Rather than getting a job and supporting himself instead of letting the rest of us hard working NYers taking care of him, he spends his days throwing animals off roofs. Maybe he can make a claim he was just complying with the NYCHA ban on large dogs.
This is just one of the many reasons I firmly believe we need to tear down the projects.
Why do they even bother talking to mothers? When did a mother ever state the truth when the truth is that the person is an f-ed up SOB?
Wow, sickening.
And Wow, what the (?)
... "Neighbors called the ASPCA about the dog, who took her to a vet."
A neighbor? Who took who to the vet?
And Wow again
..."Henderson's mother claimed that she had never seen the dog before, telling the News, "I was surprised that he got arrested for that. He's basically a quiet person, good with animals," and she told the Post, "He is around the dog all the time, and he has shown no signs of abuse with the dog or any family member."
Had she never seen the dog or was her son around it all of the time?
Which is it?
It can't be both from what you have posted here.
Jen, reread the Post article. The quote from the mom refers to their dog, Diamond (who should be removed from their household) not Oreo.
Clarified to note that the mother was referring to the family's dog.
This made me cry. Look at her sweet face, how could someone hurt her? Ugh, it makes me so fucking sad.
Also, what is UP with Jen Chung's posts? They never seem to make any sense whatsoever. Every one of them requires freakin detective work to understand. Seriously how this woman is the editor of anything is harder to comprehend than the garbage she writes.
Wow someone seems to be jealous
You're doing it wrong.
Left to right, top to bottom.
Jenn Chung IS Gothamist. YOU are just visiting.
The law's punishment for anyone who does things like this to a dog should be having the same thing done to them.
Now, Atlanta is nearing a very different record: becoming the first major city to knock them all down. By next June, officials here plan to demolish the city’s last remaining housing project, fulfilling a long and divisive campaign to reduce poverty by decentralizing it.http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/21/us/21atlanta.html?_r=1&adxnnl=1&adxnnlx=1249157046-9Y3Uw93bwjfmMlo7xlMq2A
Atlanta is a pile of crap.
The SOB is already messed up enough. We don't need to make up charges. You don't have any proof that he and his girlfriend ever did the dirty. She's as screwed up as he is anyway, since she's denying they saw the dog despite the guy admitting to being at least in the presense of the dog when it "jumped." She'd better not expect sympathy when she "jumps" or "accidentally" runs into his fists.
I'm no fan of dogs, but there's just no excuse for something like this.
That was supposed to be a reply to gothamguy.
Let someone push this punk kid off the roof & see how well he does with the fall.
he'll be hollarin "Rodney King!!!"
I have written to the chairman of the NYCHA and asked him to take immediate action to evict Fabian Henderson. If you want to do the same, go the the NYCHA website and submit your own message. You may do it anonymously if you choose.
isnt that a little fucked up. i mean granted this guy is a piece of human shit but does his entire family deserve to suffer by being evicted from their home. who knows? maybe there are small children or elderly people living in that apartment. sounds like you are just out for blood on this. i think that him going to jail should be enough. why would you take it upon yourself to write to the nycha to get a family evicted from their home. you are what i like to call a no good do gooder. as well as a self righteous asshole.
That's pretty fucked up. I can understand the kid being brought up on charges, but throwing the whole family out on the street is a bit much.
Pet owners can be a spacey bunch sometimes.
"Terrier Mix". This is obviously a pitbull. If this dog had attacked someone, rather than been the victim, this would have read pitbull. Nice Journalism.
Good point actually.
An this asshole is gonna be allowed to have any pets in the future?!
Come on?! this level of cruelty is UN FUKING believable
It always makes me wonder how long we are expected to continue with this failed experiment of providing everything (such as it is) for free to those who are nothing but a detriment to society. In a way they are holding us at ransom, and the government keeps hoping that by providing them a cost- and responsibilty-free existence, they will vote in government's favor and not rebel en masse. It is failed, they are a drain, bulldoze the projects, provide affordable housing for those who work and pay taxes. If these people survive, fine. If they don't, to me that is also fine.
Bloomberg and Quinn both struck down the humane resolution which would require public school to teach humane education. i called Bloomberg HQ about the abuse of elephants in Ringling brothers and the campaign manager responded that families enjoy the circus. Bloomberg needless slaughter of thousand of Geese only reinforced his and Quinn apathy towards animals and have turn NYC into one of the worst places for other species. I hope Bloomberg, Quinn and this ghetto trash all suffer a horrible brutal faith
Has anything good ever happened on the roof of a project?
Probably, but would it have made the news?
So the mother was saying that the dude was not guilty because the dog wasn't his?
retarded.
Can we please throw this piece of shit off a six story building and see how he does?
What does this post have to do with Bloomberg and Quinn! Please stick to the topic or at least rant about the piece of shit who did this to the poor dog!
I saw his brother defending him on NY1. They seem like great people.
Throw Fabian Henderson off a roof. Lovebale doggy lives and is adopted by nice family, idiot teenage male goes splat. Everybody wins.
snickerdoodle: I agree with you I am an animal lover & the longer I live on this planet, the more I luv animals more than "humans".
This is truly astonishing. "Throw him off a six story building." Looking at the picture of the dog makes me sad too, but how you can say that about a human being is horrible. A dog's life is NOT more important than a human's life.
Just a few blocks from where I live, two pitbulls killed a 20-year-old man. No one is outraged about that. Courts are talking about putting the dogs to sleep, but I'm sure PETA will walk in screaming "How could you do that to an innocent animal?" and those horrible dogs will be allowed to live.
However I am not surprised anymore. People have no respect for human life. We've all been so dehumanized. Just listen to yourselves; maybe someday you will see what I see. "Dadoc" is one of the worst commentors on here. These people are in poverty. You speak as if you are above them. Don't help them! Why do that when you can judge and watch them struggle to live? It's quite a show that you would enjoy, I'm sure.
Have mercy, because this will be you someday.
