Video: 200-Pound Jersey Hog Gets Roasted By Tom Mylan

Last Sunday Tom Mylan cut the tip of his finger while hustling to turn a 200-pound hog into pork tacos for hundreds of hungry hungry hipsters at 3rd Ward. WNYC was on hand to document the process from the beginning, and though they missed his dramatic injury, their video is still sickeningly fascinating. Or deliciously fascinating, if you're the kind of person who enjoys swine.

Whatever. It's all meat. Might as well eat that finger, too.

    This video is horrifying

  • AvenueHebrew

It's too bad that pig's delicious meats had to go to waste in a crusty rat-trap hipster enclave like 3rd Ward. What could be more insulting than being eaten for purely ironic reasons?

  • NannyState

And what better to wash all the irony down with than some nice P.ig R.oast B.eer?

There is some thought that early dietary regulations were formed as a result of the prevalence of certain diseases in the locale at the time, and nothing to do with cleanliness. Perhaps pigs in that place were loaded with Trichinosis. Kinda like our thing about not eating oysters during certain months. Cooking and preservation were also not the same back then. The Kosher laws also have quite specific rules regarding boils, lung pathology, broken bones, etc. Probably based on centuries of trial and error, then ascribed to our imaginary friend, the "Higher Power". This from your local neighborhood Goy.

That's the theory I'd always heard. But (according to the Hitchens(?) theory) apparently there's research suggesting that the ancient Hebrew tribes lived in areas with other, pork-eating tribes. Moreover, ancient Hebrews apparently liked their meat well-done, which would have killed pathogens. So there'd be no health reason for them not to eat pork.

Of course, they're all just theories -- I'm not arguing for one over the other.

For those of you relating the issue of eating pork and Jewish culture, konw that it is because of the nature of the beast that pigs are "dirty" animals. Search issues of keeping kosher to get the exact explanation.

whereas cows, chickens, and lambs bath often and read their torah regularly.

Reminds me of how Filipinos roast a pig. Except they tie the pig up instead of laying it out. Then they stuff the mouth with an apple at the end.

I was always more interested in the process than in the actual eating.

There's a theory (it may be Christopher Hitchens's, or maybe not) that the reason ancient Jews didn't eat pork was that the animals were just too...human-like. Other Jewish dietary restrictions seem to be based on the emotions of the animals -- for example, the prohibition against cooking a calf in the milk of the mother seems (to me at least) to be based in the idea that it would be cruel to kill a cow's calf and then add insult to injury by using the milk meant for that calf's sustenance to instead cook it. It's not crazy to think that the same thing might have been the basis for laws against eating pork.

So I think I may not be the only one who looked at that naked, pink skin and those round eyes and thought "Jesus, that's pretty much what I'd look like if they barbecued me!"

Now, don't get me wrong -- I'm by no means a vegetarian or vegan or any of that shit. (In fact, I'm eating a beef and chicken burrito right now...yummy.) But that video freaked me the fuck out. I don't think I'm eating pork again anytime soon.

  • John Del Signore

I was thinking the same thing.. there's something grossly cannibalistic about that naked pink form splayed out like that.

I salute your excellent wordplay, sir.

  • ANGRYGOD11

They may be corrupt, but even a New Jersey major deserves better than this, I think.

  • ANGRYGOD11

New Jersey Mayor deserves better than this.

  • Kojak

Do they have to lay the hog out like that? Its like someone had their way with it before the roast.

I'll pass on the pork please thx.
