The graffiti mecca of Queens is getting... buffed! liQcity has images of 5Pointz in LIC getting a fresh coat of yellow paint. The site says they are "merely getting a free canvas reset, as the owners of the building were required to repaint as part of the necessary renovations after the recent stairwell collapse." It was recently divulged that the artist studios housed inside will be vacated, following the stairway collapse earlier this year that injured one renter. But "5pointz will still exist on the exterior walls" and new pieces go up every night as artists try "to keep up with the yellow paint machines." An image of the very yellow front of the building is after the jump.

what a shame....
It sure is, it's not the same without the stairs
Agree those stairs were the shitz.. it looks too clean now
Not really; it would be if it was getting repainted borin' old yellow for good, but since they're getting to paint over it again, we get something new to look at on our commutes and the artists get more practice.
So what is going in instead of the artists studios? Fucking condos?
LIC property values spiked 50% upon the first stroke of the painter's brush.
"Artists"
Fresh Canvas! I'm with Grizzly yo. I've been taking pics there for years and the one thing i look forward to is new pieces.
Graff artists shouldn't get too comfortable. After all it is graffiti, aka illegal activity, not a sponsored sport.
I wish I had pictures from before all this. It's not gonna be the same.
i like the new heli.
It looks fabulous without all that scrawling on it.

It's all a cliché anyway. Look at all that graffiti in the photo on the right. A couple of different fonts, dark outlines, drop shadows. There's no originality in any of this, and that's true of 99.99999% of graffiti. It's all ego-stroking, all "look at my tag! It's my tag!"
that building is ugly and the graffiti there is ugly. Fuck 5 Points.
Here's what it looked like coming down those stairs: http://www.flickr.com/photos/imjustsayin/471196946/ and a crazy colorful set shot before it was repainted: http://www.flickr.com/photos/imjustsayin/sets/72157600120254758/
