Is Queens screwing the pooch when it comes to giving dogs access to parks? Last year residents were begging for a dog run at Yellowstone Blvd, and now Long Island City dog owners are being told their pups are banned from Gantry Plaza State Park, which has long allowed them.
The dog ban is specifically on the piers and has been enforced since the park opened a new section earlier this month. The Daily News reports that over 80 dog lovers met at LIC Bar last week to discuss tactics on gaining canine rights at the spot—but a NY State Parks director told the paper, "The reason we made the change is because we have a serious problem with people not picking up after their dogs."
NYCE DOG, a nonprofit group that advocates for canine issues in city parks, is helping the LIC folk, but the president of that group says "we think it's going to be a bigger issue than just here. We're going to see what can be done for respectful dog owners to walk the waterfront in state parks."

Parks are for people, not for walking in dogshit. Keep 'em out!
Nothing against the dogs... it's the dog owners that suck.
parks are for people. let them have their dog run.
I've noticed the best parks are the one's banning dogs.
the grass is clean, no worries about stepping on dog poo, urine, glass, needles, beer bottles etc.
nothing like the feeling of walking on grass with your bare feet, can't do that if there's dog crap.
I consider Prospect Park to be one of the best. They allow dogs - there are off leash hours, and MOST of the people who bring their dogs are respectful owners. I'm not going to say that there aren't any assholes or crazies - but there should be spots designated for dogs. It's a matter of responsiblity & respect - the same people who throw chicken bones on the subway floor and leave giant mounds of garbage that blow like tumbleweeds through the park are likely to be the same people who don't clean up after their dogs.
Wait - Let's just not allow poor & uneducated people in the city either! This will be great! Another problem solved.
Wait a second, are you suggesting that dogs bring glass, needles, and beer bottles into the park? Damn, I was thinking this whole time it was just inconsiderate asshole humans.
It's not the dogs that are the problem, it's their asshole owners. I'm perfectly okay with dogs being allowed on leashes but just like anything good there have to be dickwads who ruin it for everybody else.
Dog owners don't care. It's ridiculous how many dogs I've seen in Brooklyn Bridge Park, where there are lots of signs saying "no dogs allowed."
The people who ignore the signs are the same people who don't pick up their dog's crap.
maybe the PEP enforcement guys from the Hudson river park should be transferred over to Brooklyn.
obsessed dog lovers think everyone in the world should also love dogs/put up with them shitting everywhere and cant understand why people dont like them. selfish
the penalty for not cleaning up after you dog should be that the dog is taken from the owner and immediately gasses. plus a $2000 fine.
this city is covered in dog shit and i am fed up with it.
No, the penalty for not cleaning up should be:
A MANDATORY 4 hour class on responsible dog ownership
and civic duty AND
100 hours MANDATORY community service devoted solely to cleaning of city parks. Same for off-leashers and those who bring their dogs into those stores & restaurants where they are not allowed. Doubt there would be very few second offenders. Love dogs (esp mine), the problem is the owners. Either be responsible, or learn thru negative reinforcement.
I'll be more sympathetic when all of the dog crap that is in front of my apartment is picked up. Until then, it's nice to have a few places that are poo free, which, I'm afraid, is pretty much only where dogs are not allowed - the fault of a small minority or not.
Sometimes I don't understand the sense of entitlement dog owners have - and the look on their faces when they find out that they can't bring them into the restaurant, subway, bar, grocery store, section of a park etc etc.
It's a PET people! - and a responsibility (and, arguably, a luxury). And if you are so upset about not being able to take it all the places you want to go, maybe you should have considered that aspect before getting a dog. After all, a dog just as happy to go wherever you take it.
Sense of entitlement is a big problem. The extreme: http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2009/01/04/2009-01-04_woman_sues_for_10m_for_being_denied_subw.html
Now I know the dog, he's a big mush. I totally go with service dogs for those who have problems with sight, mobility, etc. But a 100-something pound service dog to protect you from memories of childhood abuse? Like I said, I know the dog, he's a sweetie; but the woman is a total wacko. Yet she won $10K. Can we all slap a little blue vest on our shotgun while riding the rails to protect us from memories of childhood bullies? I am right now designing a foam cozy which will solve the stoop-drinking ticket problem--- It's a "Service Beer"!
If a cop would just stand around on Gun Hill Road in the Bronx ticketing people that don't clean up after their dogs, he would make his quota for the year in one week.
It is absolutly disgusting up there. People seem to believe that just because they have small dogs that take small shits, they aren't obliglated to pick it up.
I truly, from the bottom of my heart believe that the police unfairly tickets people alot of the time. Lord knows I've pleaded "Not Guilty" on tixx I know was issued for spite....but in this case, if it makes the neighborhood cleaner and better, then go for it.
