A quick note from GothamistHQ: Due to a problem with our database boxes, complicated by some ongoing work with our Movable Type installation, comments have been spotty for most of the day. Do not be unduly alarmed! Our tech staff, assisted by able-bodied technologists from Six Apart and Logicworks (our host), are banging their fists on the top of the server right now. This process usually results in a working system within a matter of hours. Many apologies! If you'd like to discuss the technical details, email or direct message us.

If you comment right now, at 3:52pm, it might work!
think of how much actual work we all got done today. mind boggling isn't it?
This should be the straw that breaks the camel's back. MT's commenting isn't of enough substance to support a site of the Gothamist network's quality and size.
Seriously... have you seen the commenting system over at SBNation? My favorite cubs blog there will often do 1000+ comments a post, requiring multiple overflow threads per game. Replies work, there are in-browser notifications, you can add images easily...
What software is SBNation using? Wordpress or Drupal?
Dan says their system is using OpenCalais-- but I don't know much about that.
boooo :)
aren't comments always spotty on this site?
I think they're usually pretty good, or at least average for a blog of our size. The problem is that there are no good commenting solutions-- it's pretty ridiculous given that it's 2009.
I'm going to keep reply to this thread to test our comment speed-- please ignore me!
How about a third party comment solution, like Disqus or IntenseDebate?
The problem with Disqus or IntenseDebate is that they don't let you white label their systems. That means the user sees that they're going to another site, and the third party owns the user experience, registration, etc. When Disqus first came out, I asked them to white label it-- larger publishers would definitely pay for that. But so far, no dice.
yeah whatever just fix the fucking thing
noted!
In my experience, just rebooting servers or workstations does the trick.
But telling my boss that I had to update the BIOS, reset the firewall, edit the registry, install new OEM, reconfigure the DNS, switch out the EIDE with a SATA, replace the hubs and test the Winsock does wonders.
Work for me, baby.
If that really is a cat with a slice of cheese on its head, I may just have a great day ahead of me.
but who was phone??
We are all going to die.
