Summer Storm Sunday!

Earlier this evening, the skies opened up offered a torrent of rain—not to mention some strong winds that have left downed trees in all the boroughs. Then there were rainbows—and now there's more thunder and lightning! There's still a severe thunderstorm warning in effect; according to WCBS 2, the National Weather Service "has issued the alert for Queens, Kings (Brooklyn), Richmond (Staten Island), New York (Manhattan), and Bronx Counties in New York until 9:45 p.m."

Other useful information from WCBS 2: "National Weather Service Doppler Radar indicated an area of thunderstorms producing penny-size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 miles per hour. In addition to large hail and damaging winds, frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Move indoors immediately! Lightning is one of natures greatest killers. Remember: if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning."

Updated: Now with photographs of this evening's lightning—it was nuts!

Anyone else notice that the tornado warning issued at 6:45pm for Queens/Nassau was not covered anywhere on the local media in a timely manner. Here in Manhattan there was no scroller or warning whatsoever....the only live news, CBS, took 11 minutes to relay the warning. An epic failure on the Emergency Management front!

Same thing happened last year and/or the year before that. The big 3, National Cable Networks, covered the NWS Tornado Warning (reporting its a very unusual warning) but the local media was oblivious. News12 did report it, but not in a timely manner.

The Black Lips show at the 'Pool Party' in Williamsburg got douched. Tents flying everywhere, but generally a good time. Full photoset at http://www.flickr.com/photos/imjustsayin/sets/72157621723147177/

Last night's lightning was crazy—I was waiting for Gozer to appear.

You are you the Keymaster?!
