The litterbugs are speaking up. Following their annual Heatwave BBQ that left Prospect Park looking more like a landfill than a public oasis, hosts of the event, MIHventures has released the following "explanation":
Photo of aftermath by reader Anne
Attendance at the event was much greater than anticipated, overwhelming our clean-up efforts. Our efforts to restore the park to its original condition extended late into the evening, but after exhausting our supplies, we decided to continue the clean-up the next day. When we returned with the necessary supplies and man power, the park had been cleaned. We deeply regret, however, that volunteers and park staff ultimately shouldered the responsibility of cleaning up after our event.Surely they expected more than 25 people to show up, which is the amount you would need for a permit, which they didn't obtain, nor did they explain their lack of one. As the city contemplates legal action, MIH says they will be organizing a park clean-up event this Fall. Is that enough for what was described as the "2 to 3 acres of solid garbage" they left for the Parks Department to deal with?

good work carlson.
what an incredibly lame excuse by mih. some people have a total lack of regard for public spaces. these people need to be shamed, if they're capable of it, and fined.
What disgusting people, not just for littering but for trying to spin their piggishness and irresponsibility after the fact. Vermin.
Hey Jen! I left your email address on MIHventure's website with a link to this story, requesting a statement. Did that have anything to do with this?
I was as appalled as anyone about all the trash. That being said, I think a park clean up event is a good start by the group. If next year the situation repeats than I think the city should take serious action, otherwise this publicity may be the catalyst for more responsibility by them, as well as all others who use the park.
The explanation by MIH qualifies as the biggest piece of bulls**t this year. This was not the first year of their event: they had nearly equal turnout in past years. They completely neglected regulations by not getting a permit and failed to provide even an iota of motivation for its guests to clean up.
Their guests made no effort to clean up: we observed plates full of food and cups with beer left exactly where guests were sitting. MIH should NOT be granted a permit in the future and their clients should be made aware of their disregard for the law (and for decency) and should make decisions about their continued relationship with the company based upon this news. Needless to say, MIH is just the biggest, not the only, offender: Monday mornings during the summer offer an opportunity to review how picnickers and BBQers use or abuse the park. It's a chronic problem.
I'm still shocked that people calling themselves adults left the park like this. MIH's handling of the event was atrocious but who goes to a BBQ and leaves their stuff in the grass anyway? Do you really expect someone to clean up after you? I mean, technically MIH should have provided the means for this, but still. Really gross on so many levels. The BBQ attendees should have their fun cards revoked.
Event planning fail.
well, i think this demonstrates vividly the necessary and inescapable evils of public bbq-ing, or of picnicing in general. the parks are not your kitchen or dining room! just go eat in a restaurant like normal humans beings do when they've been enclosed in series of boxes for so long they need to have some fun! but do it on your own terms. sure the park is for walking in, or throwing something to one person and then waiting for the person to throw it back to you. the park is for to teach kids about what the world used to look like. but moreover it is for the trees and birds and squirrel rats because this is their home! if a squirrel went into your kitchen you would scream and then try to persuade your roommate to crush its skull with a snowboarding boot or something, anything, and god wouldn't blame you for it. so why can we do this in parks? because this nation, this country called america has forgot its moral anchor that should be weighing it down! these types of people are so fixated on rending goo-ey pig flesh or bird flesh from bones, they wish they could date cro-magnons, which is yet another abominable "trend" in this country. we are human! and these people want to teach their children and your children that we are really just a bunch of apes that can never get to heaven and that it's their privilege to lick their fingers in public and scatter their soiled extruded polystyrene all over the place like it's their best all-time party. it makes me want to puke in their faces! guess what people? get real–the party doesn't last forever!
Let's also note that "cups of beer" suggests that alcohol was being consumed, in violation of park regulations.
"MIHventures, LLC together with its wholly owned subsidiaries is a diversified "lifestyles" company with operations in the following business segments: Entertainment, Consumer Products and Real Estate."
the description of their company explains fully why they are obscene, irresponsible, and weasely.
a "lifestyles" company??? bah!
