As his police force mourns the death of a police officer killed in the line of duty, Jersey City Police Chief Thomas Comey spoke about the recent number of violent incidents, "This department has suffered through several unusual occurrences over the last five days. These incidents are aberrations. This is a safe city."

Besides last Thursday's gunfire that left one cop dead and others injured (with the two suspect killed), there have been a number of incidents where the police have apparently been under attack. Last night, Jersey City police officers fatally shot a woman who allegedly attacked them. The Star-Ledger reports, "The woman attacked the officers with a kitchen knife, cutting one officer on the hand and grazing another on the head, [city spokesman Stan Eason said. The officers commanded the woman, who was not identified, several times to drop the knife, according to Eason. He said she refused."

Early yesterday morning, three robbery suspects fired at Jersey City police. No one was injured; the suspects were arrested after they crashed their car into a patrol cruiser. There was also this disturbing incident: On Sunday, a woman was beaten to unconsciousness, stripped of her clothes, assaulted, and left on Communipaw Avenue; police arrested two suspects, who had also attacked another man.
