Despite objections from Save Coney Island and others, the City Council's land-use committee approved the city's controversial rezoning of Coney Island, putting the plan on track for full Council approval on July 29th. Some opponents were hoping the committee would send the plan back to the drawing board so that the proposed open-air amusement park be expanded and four high-rise hotel towers planned for the south side of Surf Avenue could be relocated. According to City Room, Councilman Dominic Recchia Jr. hinted that the city may expand the amusement area, but that will only happen if the Bloomberg administration can finalize a long-stalled deal to buy 10.5 acres of land from developer Joe Sitt before the full council votes. Sitt, who could probably best Bruce Ratner in a douchiest developer contest, told the Post yesterday, "I'm the guy who controls this—it's my sandbox." He added that he's willing "to share my sandbox with my friend Mayor Mike," but Mike wants to buy the land outright, and hasn't ruled out seizing the sandbox through eminent domain.

Yeah, in terms of the battle of douchey developers, Sitt vs. Ratner seems to be a pretty even matchup...
Sitt's managed to almost singlehandedly blight Coney. I'm sorry, but that pathetic Barnum and Bailey crap is no replacement for Astroland.
I'd still have to go with Ratner for biggest douche though. Five years of lies, and now he admits that the affordable housing is coming later (never) and that the arena is now a big concrete box. Douche.
the only way to have rights in this country is to have money - 99% of the people in coney island have no say on the future of thier community. the 1% with the money have all the say. this is why were still a city of peasants with a billionaire mayor
Bloomberg and Quinn runs this city. There is no democracy and they don't represent our interest. All the hearings are farce since the votes are already in. Quinn uses the slush funds to buy city council members votes. No bill passes without Quinn's approval. Vote Quinn out. Without Quinn, Bloomberg won't be able to get his way. Quinn sold us all out.
The jerk-store called and they're running out of Sitt.
What a disgrace. If this plan ever does get the go ahead, it will fail miserably. No one goes to Coney Island for luxury hotels and shopping. The thinking here is so insane it feels like a dream. I feel sorry for the people like Deno's Wonder Wheel and all of the independent owners who didn't sell out. What will become of them when no one comes out anymore?
See Mike? This is what happens when you let these sleazy developers make your administration their bitch.
They fuck you – you and the entire city – with big, disgusting, finger-banging monstrosities.
