Bloomberg Also Hates Proposed Concealed Gun Amendment

2009_07_bloomgun.jpg To no one's surprise, Mayor Bloomberg, who is also founder of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, is criticizing the proposed amendment that would allow people with guns registered in states that allow concealed weapons to keep their guns concealed when in NY State. PolitickerNY reports that Bloomberg called the amendment, offered by Sen. John Thune (R-South Dakota), "a terrible piece of legislation": The mayor "said that there had been no public hearings on the amendment, and said it was being attached to a military spending bill, providing senators an excuse to vote for it. Bloomberg said if the amendment stood alone, it would not pass, and that 'the hypocrisy of tying it to the safety our young men and women who are overseas is just so outrageous.'" Mayors Against Illegal Guns also ran an ad in USA Today against the amendment today.

Essentially the amendment would say that Texas State laws have jurisdiction over New York State laws while a Texan is in New York. It doesn't matter if you are for or against guns, it doesn't make constitutional sense.

"the hypocrisy of tying it to the safety our young men and women who are overseas is just so outrageous."

What about the hypocrisy of being a champion of term limits, and then only wanting to change them so he can stay in office?

it doesn't make constitutional sense.

Neither do NY's gun laws, so call it a wash.

"Mayors Against Guns Illegal Guns." He lost me there. Is Bloomberg against all guns or just illegal guns?

If they prosecuted and sent the bad guys carrying guns to jail for more than two months then perhaps the existing gun laws will work.

I doubt that this amendment would signal the good old boys to come to New York City and shoot up an after hours club in East New York.

Okay, I want to make sure I understand Bloombergs logic.

If something will benefit him personally, like getting rid of term limits, there's no need for public hearings.

If something offends him personally, like concealed weapons, then there should be public hearings.

Doucheturd...

So basically, if this bill is passed we'll be at the mercy of any nut with an address in a gun-loving state. Great.

I prefer the gun loving state of Vermont.

Now I'm confused, is this "outrageous" or merely "unconscionable"?

I'm with Bloomberg. No state should impose it's laws on other states.

Nor should one guy declare what I do with my own body. Fuck Bloomberg, I hope that twerp gets attacked.

You mind another guy imposing laws for other states but Bloomberg deciding what goes in your body is ok?

Let me guess, you're one of the dimwits that thinks he's doing great work.

Explain...

Wow! That's exactly what the South was trying to tell the North before the whole Civil War thing. It's a shame most people don't know that and would rather blame the whole thing on slavery.

The key is you can vote your local and state officials out of office. You can't do much about officials in states in which you don't reside.

Can someone even remember an incident in NYC where a legal gun owner used it in a crime??? I certainly don't.
It doesn't seem like gun laws have any effect whatsoever in NYC, except keep them out of the hands of responsible citizens. Maybe a few more (legal) shotgun blasts to the face will convince the NYPD....

I live in Oregon and have a permit to carry and it is currently recognized by 9 other states. Most states that allow concealed carry have reciprosity with other states. Sorry, but I have yet to see the bedlam due to these laws. Following this logic NY should not recognize my OR drivers's license.

The privilege of driving is virtually identical in all states, so that analogy doesn't hold.

While reciprocity exists, it is still up to each state to decide if they want to reciprocate with every other state. This law would remove that decision.

I don't think it will cause bedlam, but the above commenters are 100% correct that this law makes no sense wrt our federal system.

FUCK THIS
And Oregon ain't New York

While driving laws are similar, some states allow left on red (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right_turn_on_red) while others do not...

The issue is that a license issued in one state is honored in another--even though the license holder is subject to the laws of the state in which they are located.

This does not "ignore" any state law. Sort of like the CCW permit holders FROM NY being able to carry in about 13 other states without getting a ccw in that OTHER state? http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/newyork.pdf

The 2nd amendment is part of the US Constitution. The US supreme court upheald this last year that this is an individual's right.Based on this I see that a state honor this or the 9th & 10th amendment are invoked that the federal government has no say in state's law.Either way you go we gun owners win as in the 1st case we carry everywhere or in the 2nd case federal law is trumped by state law and in the South that would limit all current federal gun laws.

Um sure. The US supreme court said that there can't be an outright ban on hand guns. However, in the District of Columbia, it is still illegal to carry a hand gun outside of your home. Also, the 2nd amendment doesn't say anything about self defense. It specifically mentioned the right to bear arms as being necessary for militias. Its all one sentence. Really.
