Prospect Heights Double Murder: Men Found Shot Dead In Car

2009_07_phshot.jpg On Saturday night, two men were shot to death while sitting in a car parked at Washington Avenue and St. John's Place in the Prospect Heights section of Brooklyn, just two blocks from the Brooklyn Museum. According to police, Vance Rock, 23, was shot in the head and Darrian Delk, 19, was shot in the torso; both were pronounced dead the hospital. WPIX reports the gunmen may have been on motorcycles.

Rock and Delk had attended a block party earlier in the evening. The Daily News reports, "Witnesses told cops that a fight erupted earlier in the evening that may have involved the two men... Detectives suspect the shooting was in retaliation for that fracas, though the nature of the altercation was not immediately known." The NY Times set the scene, "Food and drinks were served, and people danced to salsa, reggae and Michael Jackson songs. Mothers brought children in strollers. Then, about 10 p.m., the music was turned off, and suddenly the sound of three or four gunshots rang out, according to some witnesses."

One neighbor told the Times, "I have heard it is about a woman. I heard it was about bikers," while a relative of the victims said the shooters wanted the car. Police said there were no shell casings at the scene, raising the possibility a revolver was used; a detective told the News, "The shooters are getting smarter. [It] could be a more professional job."

And last night there was some sort of "memorial service" in the form of a crotch rocket parade back and forth, in and around Prospect Heights. About 5 bikes and a few cars blasting music. Really annoying and kinda violent. I just about threw a molotov at them from my rooftop. Next time I may.

Crotch rockets need to be outlawed. Pure and simple. They are violent, noise polluting dangers to neighborhoods and the children that play in the street...and set off car alarms (another mindless nuisance) as they pass by.

Loud machines for small penis men.

There are links to the WPIX, the Daily News, and the New York Times... Yet there isn't a description of the butchers who murdered these poor souls in cold blood. The shooters may have been on motorcycles-well that narrows it down a bunch...

When I walked through the party, just after 10 pm, they had just turned off the music. The Caprice was on my right, just past where they had set up a basketball court. Three or four men were beginning to fight, along with one woman. I told my partner (who is quite oblivious) that we should get the fuck out of there, and we quickly left the scene. We must have been in the hallway of our building when the shots were fired - we didn't hear anything like shots - but we did hear shortly thereafter sirens and see flashing lights. We didn't think anything of it - our building is next to the firehouse on St Johns btwn Wash and Classon. We also heard motorcycles (though not immediately, much later) and a copter that buzzed our nabe for the next three hours. We didn't know about the shooting until the next day, but that night we were surprised at the lack of after party - as we were walking through, the DJ or Mike Jones made an announcement that the after party would be behind the firehouse on St Johns. There was a big party there a couple of weeks ago that resulted in us having to use ear plugs to sleep, so we were confused as to why there wasn't a party keeping us up, just a copter.

As the police have noted, "The shooters are getting smarter." The pros have known for a long time that a revolver is a better instrument for their line of work. They are less prone to jamming and there are no cartridges left at the scene. Unless of course you use a speed loader.

"salsa, reggae and Michael Jackson songs." Bad music mix probably led to the one sided gunfight.
