Congresswoman and likely Senate candidate Carolyn Maloney may have stepped in some serious S-word. While giving an interview to the publication City Hall, Maloney was discussing Kirsten Gillibrand's stances being all over the map and relayed a story from a voter on the issue of language in the schools: "I got a call from someone from Puerto Rico, said [Gillibrand] went to Puerto Rico and came out for English-only [education]. And he said, ‘It was like saying n—r to a Puerto Rican.’” City Hall emphasizes that Maloney used the "full racial slur." Talk about bad PR! Well, if Jesse Jackson wasn't going to let Nas use the N-word, you knew Al Sharpton would waste no time in having words for Maloney. The Reverend, who has already endorsed Gillibrand, said the utterance was "alarming and disturbing at best" and wants her to out the person who said this "so we know that in fact this conversation did occur and the way in which it occurred." Maloney was quick to back away from the comment, saying, "I apologize for having repeated a word I find disgusting. It's no excuse but I was so caught up in relaying the story exactly as it was told to me that, in doing so, I repeated a word that should never be repeated."

Whatever... Not news. Sharpton is still an idiot. I thought he stayed with the Jackson family...
at least she didn't say "midget"
Is a black midget called a nidget?
She's not afraid of words! Quick, get an axe! She's a witch, burn her!
Seriously-- calling someone something is pretty different than clinically discussing a term. She didn't "drop an N bomb" any more than your doctor gives you whatever disease he diagnoses you with.
I got a word for this "story"
"yawn"
Liberals are the worst bigots around, it's no surprise they spend so much time and effort accusing others of racism. Psychiatric professionals call this "projection" and I see it a whole lot on this site.
AMEN!
I love it when the illiterates discover "projection". Listen, son, if you like to start playing with a new word that's fine. Just keep in mind it's new only to you.
See, if you discover that someone is accusing someone else of something they are guilty of to begin with, projection may be the reason why. The problem with your reasoning is that you have no proof that they are guilty of it to begin with. So, you are giving us an explanation for something you haven't even proved to be in existence. In short: your post is useless.
Keep reading though. I suppose if you read enough, at some point you'll start making sense. You are not there yet, though.
"Nigger" is kept under lock and key. I like saying it. It's very freeing. Try it. Nigger. Nigger. Nigger.
yeah liberals are the worst bigots around hahahahahahahaha
I'm waiting for Jonah Goldberg's next book, "Nazis Are Liberals (And So Are the KKK and Aryan Nations)"
I can't believe anyone is defending her. "Yawn"? "Not news"? Seriously?? It may be "just a word", but the Nazi flag was also "just a flag". Symbols and words have a lot of power, and Maloney's choice of word, even if it was a "relay" comes with a lot of history and baggage.
Sharpton may be the biggest idiot around, but don't let his not-so-surprising call for whatever distract from the fact that Maloney showed incredible lack of discretion, tact, common sense, and sensitivity. Gillebrand is an utter moron, but I think she's smart enough to know not to step into this kind of mess.
Maloney's PR agency is obviously worthless as well if they couldn't keep this from getting published the way it was. If Maloney were smart, she would be more open about this and try to start a discussion about the power of this word and work to to get everyone to talk in an honest constructive way. Of course, I'm sure they want to try to bury the whole thing first.
Which agency does her PR??
The Nazi comparison is weak...Jews don't walk around waving swastikas at each other, but a large portion of the black community uses the n-word in everyday conversation.
I was thinking more of people, particularly in the South, who claim the Confederate flag is "just a flag" and drew a weak comparison to someone above saying the N-bomb is "just a word".
I also get tired of the argument that people call each other the n-word all the time, so it's okay. Some people out there use it because they're idiots; others claim they're trying to reappropriate the meaning - either one is ridiculous.
It doesn't make it okay, but it does mean we shouldn't tackle her over it, especially considering the context where she used it.
What we're saying here is that this word has so much perverse power that it must not only be removed from our everyday speech, but also that we must whitewash facts to avoid it ever crossing anyone's lips in any context. Sorry, but that's ridiculous -- and it's something we don't do with any other word.
We're actually proposing that, on reporting something, we should say things like "Well, he said 'Fuck that bitch's shit, he's a bitch-ass n-word.'" No -- if the fact is that a guy said "bitch-ass nigger," then he said "bitch-ass nigger." He didn't say "n-word."
Besides, this word is quickly becoming common parlance in certain communities, and thereby losing any power. "He's my nigga." "Hey, nigga, how are you?" "Bam! Hit that little nigga with a freeze pop!" These are common expressions now -- and over time, you can only expect the word to have less and less power. That's a good thing -- if the word isn't going to disappear (and, sadly, it doesn't seem to be), then instead let it become powerless and null. Creating a fetish about the word by acting scared of it...it's just giving strength to it. Let the word (like the racists who once employed it) lose its power to hurt and become just another word.
We need to legitimize and incorporate all of these verboten words into everyday speaking so we tire of them. So we tire of them. It's the only way.
It's a quote, and a quote that deserves the full word.
The original speaker said it, and was obviously trying to emphasize the repulsiveness of Gillibrand's actions. Maloney, as G's rival, seeks to prove and emphasize her superiority to G.

Another non-story. Next.
That quote barely makes sense with our without "the n-word".
