NJ Cracks Down On Drivers Hungering For Sonic Burgers

2009_07_sonicdri.jpg Last month, a Sonic Drive-In opened in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ, off Route 17. And apparently it's so popular that it's causing some problems. WCBS880 reports, "Just a couple of nights ago, an unruly customer who was turned away from the new Sonic restaurant sped off and dragged a police officer," who ended up with a broken leg and ankle. Oh, and the driver was unlicensed and is now in jail. Anyway, now the Bergen County prosecutor says "that drivers lined up for burgers will now get hit with a fine of $100 if they're blocking the highway." The Bergen Record reports, "Sonic officials said the company and its franchisee will continue to work closely with municipal authorities to control traffic around the drive-in. They also said that traffic volume typically levels off once a drive-in "becomes a more established part of community life."

Sonic is not even my favorite fast food burger, but I would take it over most of the ones I've had in the city.

That said, did no one really see this coming?

Fast food restaurant that caters to people in their cars placed just off the biggest cluster f*#ck highway system in the state famous for cluster f*#ck highway systems, AND for some of the worst drivers?

I don't think Sonic wants business. I think they're just messing with Jersey.

Greasy Middle American fried crap? What exit?

Kind of like the way NYC went ape shit for an entire month & a half after they opened a cheap, Swedish furniture store in Brooklyn?

The Totowa location lets you wait your turn, so if you really want the drive-in experience, go there.

Sonic = bad food eaten in your car

Mmmmm....Sonic onion rings. And strawberry shakes with actual strawberries in them. And cherry lime rickeys. I'm glad I'm going down South next month to get my Sonic on.

i drove by it yesterday and was confused as to why every business on that side of the rode had signs saying "NO PARKING FOR SONIC" hahaha

Good point. They dont have near the population we do in the tristate. Not to mention weve all been being blue-balled by the commercials for 3 years.

Cluster**** indeed. All of northern NJ is major highways - it's poor planning all the way. They opened another one in Totowa, NJ (also on a highway of course) and they have the same traffic/congestion. They did not have the space to make it like they are in the South and elsewhere. People are idiots to wait 30 mins for "fast" food.

For those of you going for a pit stop on the way to AC go to the one south of Toms River or take a gallivant to Kingston NY. The new one sounds like a cluster fuck being next to an airport and major highways
