The first City Council member to resign as a result of a slush fund scandal wasted no time settling matters with the US Attorney's office. Today former Councilman Miguel Martinez pleaded guilty to money laundering and mail fraud, stealing in total over $100,000 intended for non-profit groups. In court today, Martinez said, "I received the money as a direct result of the conspiracy. I engaged in this scheme as a New York City Council member. I was able to engage in these schemes because I was a New York City councilman." Martinez copped a plea deal with prosecutors who recommended he be sentenced to around 4 to 6 years for charges that usually warrant up to 20, but the federal judge today noted that the court did not have to comply with that advice. The Times says Martinez had a "once-promising political career" while representing Washington Heights and Inwood, a seat that NY1 says will not have a special election because it would fall too close to September primaries.

Ruined your life for 100K? Yep, sounds like the mental acuity of a NYC Councilman
They're all assholes....
100K isn't crap now-a-days. Thats just horrible. Plus he has that baby momma in the Heights...
meanwhile, nothing happens to Christine Quinn
And no one will touch electoral law reform... so corrupt idiots will continue to "win" elections.
You know how many council seats go unchallenged in elections because of BS legal maneuvering between candidates that mires them in huge legal / volunteer costs?
I swear to god, someone has to come in and just burn the entire electoral law book in NY state and start from scratch. Otherwise we're going to continue to have corrupt senator / councilmen / governors on into infinity.
Painfully obvious- is that the NYTimes didn't include in their 'journalistic reporting' (such as it is-) that Mr. Martinez was elected in 2001 as a member of the Democrat Party.
It is for this selectively lax reporting that the Gray Lady is losing and losing big... How the Lady has fallen. OH well... the reporter will probably be out of a job soon- my recommendation is that he doesn't buy anything requirinf time payments...

Well, the good news is that as part of a plea agreement, he must be talking. So other crooks in the City Council may be getting a phone call from the feds soon.
Right. And Quinn cruises toward re-election? Please vote her out. Maria Passannante-Derr would be a strong choice to replace her.
