Queens resident Jimmy Hedin is feeling a different kind of sticker shock this week after a defective vehicle registration decal landed him two $65 parking tickets. As 1010 WINS reports, Hedin parks his car in Rego Park most of the week, "so a few days had passed before he realized he had been issued two tickets for the same offense—failure to properly display a current registration sticker." Hedin appears to have received one of 2.5 million registration stickers backed with defective glue. The adhesive loses its grip and causes the stickers to peel off—a flaw the DMV has acknowledged by offering to replace defective decals for free—so Hedin challenged the tickets in court. A judge dismissed the first ticket on account of the defect, but refused to dismiss the second ticket: "The claim that the sticker became unglued does not present a valid defense." Apparently, even some traffic tickets have more adhesive power than those registration stickers.

I understand that the ruling is to prevent the abuse of the same defense used in later cases, but this is just plain stupid.
how can the judge dismiss one but not the other if its the exact same issue? can this be appealed?
I think the guy should do what most of us do: Pay the second ticket and continue building up intense contempt for traffic cops and "the man".
happens to me too. If you appeal more than one ticket at a time they usually dismiss the most expensive one.
that happened to me once - it feel off the window - was still clearly visible but they gave me a ticket - its not about laws or justice - its about making MONEY for a corrupt goverment.
I had noticed my inspection sticker doing the same thing.
Again, Gothamist has saved humanity by making us aware of a potentially tragic consequence of a humanity-threatening malfunction. I'm going right home now to place Scotch Tape on my inspection sticker so the world doesn't come tumbling down on me.
Basically, these so-called "judges" are no more than enforces for an administrative hearing. This has almost nothing to do with with real court or rules of law. It is absolutely about collecting revenue for the city and almost nothing to do with common sense or fairness. If justice is blind, it's because she got her eyes poked out in parking ticket court!
My comment disappeared. Horror!
I got one of those registration stickers too. Two small stips of tape fixed the problem. Tada!
easy solution, scotch tape with tabs. this way there's no mark when you switch it out.
