Amputee Cop Gets Uplifting Visit From Other Amputee Officer

Officer Eric Grimes
The narcotics officer who lost his leg below the knee after getting pinned by a crashed car got a much-needed boost from a fellow NYPD amputee. Officer Eric Grimes was leading drug suspects into a police van in Brooklyn on Tuesday when two cars collided and jumped the curb, crushing his lower left leg and foot. When he awoke from surgery at Kings County Hospital later that night, a surprise visitor was waiting for him: Officer Rachid Elkadi, whose right leg was amputated below the knee in May 2006 after an off-duty motorcycle accident. Elkadi spent an hour with Grimes to show him that his amputation didn't have to be a career ender; Elkadi himself returned to work a year after his accident. Now a "field intelligence officer" in Queens, Elkadi spoke with the Daily News about his bedside visit: "[Grimes] let out a sigh of relief and said, 'You are a breath of fresh air. I needed to see you.' He asked me how my life has changed. I said, 'You are not limited to anything.'"

Shake a leg! But he might fall.... Guess thats what you eventually get for selling out and putting people away, tearing famliys apart for a dollar. All for what? the standards of old crochety white men sitting on perches in the supreme court, dictating what humans have been doing since the beginning of time as illegal. Dont worry the others get theres too, nursing homes are rife with silent universal justice.

"Silent universal justice? Is that why they smell like pee?

It must suck to always be immediately identified as The Bad Guy.

    Wait a minute...

    An uplifting, feel-good, "cop-is-a-good-guy" story?

Who are you, and what have you done with the real Gothamist?

  • sixthreeone

Seriously, it doesn't even look like anyone is bashing the police on the comments either...I am truly amazed.

  • yytttt

wouldn't it be more uplifting if instead of just visiting him, he shot someone across the street from the projects for him?

  • nicemarmot

Officer Elkadi is 100% right. With modern prosthetics you really can live a full normal life after an amputation. Good luck to Officer Grimes.

  • NannyState

I agree. There's that guy from South Africa that can actually run faster than most legged guys and he has this cool ass paddle. Makes me want to hand over a leg...

  • Kojak

You can, but there are social implications. Many women won't marry a man with an amputation (Not sure about the other way around though)

And I don't want to hear from the feminist community that I'm wrong. This is a known fact, especially within certain cultures.

Really? My father was an amputee. He never seemed to have any trouble finding ladies. In fact some of them seemed to see it as a badass sort of thing.

  • Kojak

Well I wouldn't say most people, but some would think they would only be marrying 'half' a man. Depends on where they're coming from I guess.
