Cop, Pinned by Car Crash, Loses Part of Leg

071509crash.jpg An unidentified NYPD narcotics officer had one of his legs amputated below the calf last night after getting pinned by a car that jumped the curb during an accident in Brooklyn. The plainclothes officer, a five and a half year NYPD veteran, was loading drug bust prisoners into a van at about 5 p.m. at the intersection of Avenue U and East 34th Street in Marine Park, when two vehicles traveling opposite directions slammed into each other and jumped the curb. The cop was rushed to Kings County Hospital and is listed in serious but stable condition. No one else was hurt in the incident, and according to 1010 WINS, neither of the drivers have been charged and police have ruled this an accident.

Shake a leg! But he might fall.... Guess thats what you eventually get for selling out and putting people away, tearing famliys apart for a dollar. All for what? the standards of old crochety white men sitting on perches in the supreme court, dictating what humans have been doing since the beginning of time as illegal. Dont worry the others get theres too, nursing homes are rife with silent universal justice.

It really wasn't an accident, but I mean really, was anyone really going to type up that report on the 'ol Selectric III?

    Not so much.

    Karma's a bitch.

Poor man - my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

  • My prayers are squarely with those unfortunate to be harassed for victimless crimes. One less narc means a safer NYC for everyone.

  • The Edge

Until your dumbass gets mugged though, right?

Then you'll wonder "where were the cops?".

  • Really? When's the last time a narc protected you from a mugger?

You also err by assuming that I want to eliminate all policing. No where did I make such a blanket statement.

I'm a market anarchist in the tradition of Gustave de Molinari, Murray N. Rothbard, David Freidman, Bruce Benson, Roderick Long, et. al.. I suggest you learn something about the superiority of private defense agencies before opening your squawk-box again.

  • I make it a policy to not feel bad for NYPD. They are almost exclusively either useless or assholes. The .002% that are neither should probably work in Bergen County.

This is true. When I've had to deal with a police officer outside of NYC, I usually start off on the defensive and soon realize that they're actually helpful and courteous.

There are many efficient and good NYPD cops, but none of them are the ones who interact with the public.

If you're efficient and smart, you become a detective, high-ranking officer or transfer to the 'burbs. If you're stupid and rude, you're given a job where you have to deal with the public.

    now he can collect disability.

    ro-bo-cop! ro-bo-cop! ro-bo-cop!

  • Manitoba

Even when cops are hurt, it's still ruled an accident?

How can two cars, traveling in opposite directions, slam into each other, yet nobody is at fault?? How fast were they traveling if they went flying onto the curb?

The speed limit anywhere in the New York limits should be capped at 20-25 mph. To go any faster (even in deep Queens, Brooklyn or S.I.) is unnecessary. Of course, the NYPD would never enforce it.

  • jibbly

You know things are skewed in favor of car drivers when even cops can't do anything but rule it as an accident.

  • drewo

Who has time for messy paperwork? Not to mention, as #5 Jacque says, he is probably most concerned about getting onto disability.

It may just be easier to push through the disability paperwork and approval process if the incident is ruled an accident, and no further investigation is required.

  • grandzu

In a situation like this, for rehab purposes, he would be better off if they had amputated below the knee.

  • Manitoba

Good point. How do you amputate a leg below the calf? Isn't that just the foot?
