  • From the Gothamist Newsmap: a barricaded EDP on 116th St and Liberty Ave in Queens, a bank robbery at Citibank on Myrtle Ave in Brooklyn and a truck vs. overpass at Grand Ave and 57th St in Queens.
  • A New Jersey man pleaded guilty for stealing 91 lobster tails from Bally's Atlantic City in February and will serve four years in prison. The AP adds, "The lobsters, worth $1,275, were destroyed."
  • Nassau County's Wall Of Shame, meant to humiliate drunk drivers, will not show photographs of the arrestees before they are convicted.
  • A sign of the times: Salvation Army has hit the streets with kettles on sidewalk now, many months before Christmas.
  • While Kirsten Gillibrand had to be cut off for being long-winded (once again) in her introduction of Sonia Sotomayor, Chuck Schumer kept things (relatively) succinct with a shout out to Cardinal Spellman.
  • Debbie Rowe is demanding a retraction from the NY Post, which claims that she asked the Jackson family for $4 million to give up her rights to her children with Michael Jackson.
  • Chipotle is sponsoring free screenings of the documentary Food, Inc. in 32 U.S. cities to showcase its eco-friendly "food with integrity" philosophy.
  • Donnie Walsh denies that the Knicks are trying to lowball Nate Robinson and David Lee. In other Knicks news, Eddy Curry's trainer thinks it's ridiculous for the team to suggest Curry can slim down to 285 pounds; the player has lost 30 pounds and is now 328.
  • Emmy Awards host Neal Patrick Harris wants to add his own voice to the show, but "which voice to choose? I’m torn between gangsta, foppish Brit, and robot. Really proud of my robot. We’ll see what happens on the night."
  • Mario Batali will be voicing the character "Rabbit" in Wes Anderson's The Fantastic Mr. Fox.
  • How many of the 101 Muppets from Sesame Street can you name on this interactive map?
  • And here's a lovely glimpse of what it looks like to hang out inside a Queens sewer after a swim in the East River, as captured by artist Judith Supine.

The Salvation Army is out begging on the streets in July? What happened to the $1.5 billion bequest from Joan Kroc in 2004? How did they manage to blow through that already?

  • NannyState

They spent the money on whores and trips to Vegas. get over it.

As I understand it, half the Kroc gift went for the construction of community centers with the other half forming an endowment to support those centers. None of the gift could go toward supporting existing programs. At the time of the gift the endowment income wouldn't be enough to fully support the new centers. It was estimated at the time that the Salvation would have to raise an additional $40-60 million per year to support the new centers. Given the dive the stock markets have taken it is not surprising that the SA is in a money pinch. Essentially the Kroc gift screwed the SA.

It's reassuring to know that a man who steals 91 lobster tails will be going to prison for four years while an individual that commits vehicle homicide does 90 days.

    BRAVO! You idiot judges.
