A tipster from 119 West 23rd Street just wrote in saying the building was evacuated earlier this afternoon for over in hour in what was originally thought to be a gas leak. She writes: "So all us employees at Tekserve (and the offices above) were just evacuated for about an hour after a stinky rotten egg smell permeated the building. Thought it might be a gas leak, but it turns out that someone at the salon on one of the upper floors poured some heavy-duty professional-grade drain cleaner in the pipes. Incorrectly." Woops. The fumes aren't dangerous, but Sarah Lewitinn (aka Ultragrrrl) was also in the building at the time and panic-Twittered about some of the side effects: "My lips feel numb and weird as do my legs. Lightheaded. Not cool. TELL PPL THERE'S A GASLEAK!" UPDATE: Lewitinn says several people in the building are sick, and worries that it may have been something harmful leaking. And given that Con Ed might be involved, she may have reason to be!

Are twitheads now using Twitter instead of 911 to call for emergency aid?
Or is tweeting wolf a new trend?
I never thought anything could be as annoying as Facebook until Twitter came along and made people even dumber and more narcissistic. I hope her lips are still numb for being such an F'ing moron.
I love how the idiot sent out a tweet instead of seeking medical care.
Ok, for your information, I twittered that as I left the building because: they did not properly evacuate the building by pulling an alarm, yet felt it necessary to put "DO NOT ENTER" tape up. I didn't call 911 cos THERE WERE FIREFIGHTERS already there. I had told them several times that people were still in the building and to please put on an alarm. I called my friend who was in the office 2 floors up to tell her to evacuate the building and to tell her office the same. This is why I twittered that ppl should get out - since other friends of mine in the building follow me on twitter and I don't have their info. So for doing something to help other people, I'm being picked on? The people leaving comments might just sit by and let things harm others, but I don't.
Also, the issue I had was that the building was not properly evacuated. If there was an assumption of gas leak because of the OVERWHELMING stench of sulfer, wouldn't the proper procedure be to evacuate the building until the source of smell is discovered?
Also, it should be noted that the building was filled with firefighters on Friday as well. There were about 15 trucks. No alarm. No evacuation. Nothing. Based on the fact that everyone in my office feels ill, makes me think that something is up. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a gasleak and there was some sort of cover up since no alarms went off.
Aaaaahhhhhh!!!!!

Sorry. Better now.
Sorry. Did not mean to be too mean.
I guess some stories can't be fully told in 140 characters or less.
I work in the same building, the firemen were here on friday, because someone was smoking on the roof and it started a fire.
Like O.M.G. someone coulda died!
