State Senate Gave Staff Raises During Stalemate

2009_02_stsen.jpg Guess some State Senators weren't doing nothing during the 5-week State Senate—they actually gave staffers big raises! According to the Daily News, "Records released by state Controller Thomas DiNapoli show that 11 top staffers have gotten pay hikes of as much as 51% since the June 8 Republican-led coup." Here's some of the raises, all to Democratic aides: "Mortimer Lawrence, special counsel to the Senate majority leader and the highest-paid Senate staffer," got an increase of "16% to $177,231," while Senate Majority Deputy Secretaries Meredith Henderson and Patricia Rubens got 30.6% raises—"their annual pay skyrocket[ed] nearly $33,000, to $140,382. Legislative Analyst Despina Moraitou's salary climbed 51.1% to $75,787 - a $25,651 bump." A Senate Democrat tells the Post, "This is one of the most outrageous things I've ever seen. Frankly, I'm ashamed of it." Senate spokesman Austin Shafran claims the raises were scheduled before the coup.

What a bunch of asshats.

This is unbelievable. You would think that these senators would have some sensitivity to the state's economic difficulties. This is completely outrageous. I'm unemployed and they gave raises that are in excess of my income from Social Security. No, I'm not retired. Give me a job and I'll gladly work.

This senate is outrageous. All of these people should be voted out of office. Better yet, defeat them in the primaries. Let them know right from the beginning that we won't stand for this.

This is the reason why politicians do what they do. They full well know 9/10 times they can get away with it and the public is too stupid to notice or cares more about Michael Jackson, Lindsay Lohan and other celebs than hard core issues at hand.

wow why am i not surprised.

fuckin skanks.

"Senate spokesman Austin Shafran claims the raises were scheduled before the coup."

Well then they should have been UNscheduled after the coup.

I think we're all missing the point that this was for their staff. You know, like secretaries and aides. The senators didn't authorize a raise for themselves, they did it for their workers. Though the increases seem a bit much, I can't be as strongly opposed to this as if it were their own paychecks.

Yes, there is certainly no way that the senators saw a dime of any of this money. Nope. No way, no how. It's not like these people are the very definition of corrupt douchebaggery or anything.

*cough*kickbacks*cough*.

Aherm, excuse me.

Yes, because I give my boss shares of my money when he gives me a raise.

*crosses eyes mockingly*

Put down the pitchforks people. They could have raised their own wages 30% and lowered their staff's by just as much.

Either way, those percentages are outrages. I don't care if you lick the toilets clean in addition to your normal working duties, no one deserves such insane raises.

Meanwhile, down here in the land of the living and working, our annual raises have been canceled.

pitchforks and torches anyone?

Mac, secretaries dont get paid 100k or more. These giant raises are fishy and 100% politically motivated.

Obviously these are politically-motivated because this is....uh...government?

$177,231 CAN BUY SO MANY JELLY BEANS.

FUCK EM All
VOTE OUT ALL THE INCUMBENTS NEXT ELECTION

this makes me think of all the people who fought, sacrificed and sometimes died all for what is, lets face it, a corrupt goverment.
