Toll$ Go Up On Bridges And Tunnels Starting Today

2009_07_wtr.jpg Grab some quarters if you're crossing the East River today. The crossings run by the MTA—the RFK, Whitestone, Throgs Neck Bridges plus the Midtown and Battery Tunnels all go up 50 cents to $5.50 today. The toll hike is the last phase of the revenue being raised by the MTA in the face of their budget crisis. Of course at one point the plan involved tolls being introduced to all the East River crossings, but that dream proposed by now (sort of) Lieutenant Governor Richard Ravitch was shot down by everyone's favorite state senators. Other tolls going up today include the Henry Hudson, Marine Bay, Cross Bay and Verrazano Bridges—the last of which is now up to a whopping eleven dollars. One Upper West Sider told WCBS 2, "I don't understand how you can get away with it, I mean it is better than the doomsday scenario. It was poorly advertised and a lot of people are going to be caught off guard."

and 99% of people will just shut up and pay it.

most of them will even say "thank you" when they put their hand out for their change.

Why does Gothamist insist on making the Verrazano Bridge toll seem like its so huge? They collect tolls 1 way so its as much as any of the other tolls.

The problem the Verrazano Bridge causes is that the toll is reversed, i.e. it is free ENTERING NYC and doubled LEAVING.

To evade the $11 fare leaving to NJ, drivers seeking to go to NJ then EXIT via the Holland Tunnel.

The one-way reversed Verazano Bridge is directly responsible for most of the excess traffic congestion on Canal, Broome, Varick and Hudson Streets, as drivers seek to beat the toll to NJ by leaving through the Holland Tunnel.

Does one need a permit to build a bridge? I mean like if I wanted to build a series of bridges or tunnels across the Hudson River so I can make some bucks. Where do I start? Do I just order some steel and concrete and go at it? Do I have to know someone, like someone in the mob or government? Oops that being the same, sorry for the duplication.

States own the banks and river beds of all navigable rivers up to the high water line.

I wouldn't use the state banks I would float a bond to raise the money. Also I would be above their high water line. No sense of making a bridge/car wash combo just to make a few extra bucks.

you only pay one way on the gwb - you only pay one way on the holland and lincoln - so yes the 11 dollars is VERY expensive -

Why stop at the East River? Toll every bridge and roadway that cross all the small creeks and rivers in the city: Newtown Creek? $2.50. The Gowanus? $3.00. Beats a canoe, right? Oops, you just passed over a long ago buried tributary of the Bronx River. That'll be a buck...

Good point. How about Canal street? That was originally an outlet for the Collect Pond and it seems only natural to charge at least a quarter for crossing the street in a motorized vehicle, pedestrians ten cents, goats and other domesticated animals under 100 pounds fifteen cents, geese and central park carriage horses twenty five cents.
