Bullet Fragments Injure Cops As They Fire At Pit Bull

2009_07_pitbulla.jpg Last night, three police officers were hit by bullet fragments when, WABC 7 reports, "they tried to thwart an attack by a pit bull terrier in a public housing complex on the Upper East Side." The pit bull's owner, who police say deliberately set the dogs on the cops, was also hit by a fragment. NYPD spokesman Deputy Commissioner Paul Brown said, "The bullets fragmented and shattered. They were in the hallway, a very confined space."

The cops were responding to a call about an assault at the First Avenue building between 93rd and 94th Streets. According to the Daily News, "When they got to the 11th floor of the 20-story building and knocked on the door of the apartment in question, a woman opened it and the snarling pit bull leaped out. All six cops went for their guns while trying to fend the dog off with their hands and feet, police said."

The cops fired at the dog, which was killed, while the other people in the apartment "barricaded themselves inside for about a half-hour" before later surrendering. The dog's owner Milagros Martinez was hit in the hand, while one cop was hit below the eye, another in the hand, and another hit on the nose by bullet fragments. Martinez may be charged today. Neighbors were not surprised, with one resident telling the Post, "That apartment has always been trouble. There's something always going on over there." And a young teen said of one of cops, "He's real nice. He always works on the block and he always has something nice to say."

Next time you see a pitbull anywhere, look at the owner. Case closed.

The pit bull was spewing antisemitic barks at the cops.

My favorite thing is when people say that people "breed pitbulls to be agressive, mean, etc.". You can't breed a dog for that, you TRAIN a dog. The people who mistreat their dogs and turn them into weapons are the same people who shoot each with guns they shouldn't have.

I've got a pit, I know plenty of people with pits, and the problem we have most is OTHER people with usually small dogs that are over agressive. If your little turd of a dog attacks my pit, and my dog even barks or blinks incorrectly, let alone snaps, I'm the one at fault because I have a "vicious breed". So sick of this crap.

    People is ig'nint!

  • nicemarmot

Word. Those little dogs are seriously nasty. They're trying to attack my dog and their owner's like "ha ha! it's biting your dog! isn't it cute!" Um, no. I should let my dog bite back, but she's too well trained.

My brother has a pitbull. He's a nice dog. Sleeps a lot. Very lazy.

In every pitbull story there is always one assnugget who says "Pitbulls are beautiful, its the people who misuse them'

  • pally

Just as there is always at least one ignoramus who claims that pitbulls are dangerous and scary. It's true that pitbull owners need to spend more time & energy than owners of other breeds to make sure their dog isn't aggressive with other dogs ... but you have to actively teach (read: abuse) a pitbull to be aggressive with other humans. This is a fact, and the only way to argue w/ it is to make things up.

I have a dog, and the cost of feeding her and taking her to the vet is so damn expensive! How do people in public housing on welfare have the money to have a dog? Oh wait - my tax dollars at work.

  • felixthecat2

Your taxes goes to Quinn's slush fund, these people are usually in the drug trade or other illegal activities including dog fighting. I wish a pitbull would bit fugly whoppi goldberg who stated dogfighting was part of her culture.

pitbulls are the most loving and loyal dogs but humans are so perverse and ignorant that they uses the pit's beautiful qualities as weapons. fucking people

  • NannyState

    So kill yourself already.

  • kswissreject

I like the last sentence; usually, it seems someone would say that about the asshole pit-bull owner; in this case, perhaps it's actually accurate (about the cop).

  • whitecastlerock

A dog murdered by the police-will felixthecat2 come out of the litter box for this story?

  • nicemarmot

Poor dog. Shoulda shot the owner first. Getting rid of evil owners is the only real way to get rid of bad dogs.

  • theLtrain

Pit Bulls aren't allowed in the projects anymore

  • Rfive

why? they don't pay rent on time?

  • Clarice City

I feel sorry for nice people who have rescued and trained pit bulls. I adopted my doggie from the ASPCA and when I went there, the place was full of pit bull type breeds and a lot of them had the high rish "red collar" on. It's not the dogs fault that brain damaged low lifes breed them for agression and fighting, but needless to say, pit bulls scare the shit out of me and I went home with a abandoned spaniel mix dog because I could never handle a dog like that (sleep with one eye open).

People have bred these dogs to be dangerous for so long that's its made the breed types almost untouchable. Many counties have (and I grew up in one myself) banned the breeds that people use to breed pitbull types because of asshole scumbags like Milagro Martinez that never nueter the dog and then abuse it to make it angry. And then, ladies and gentelman, you have yourself a loaded weapon.

Miracle-Boy Matinez should be charged with attempted murder.

  • hotstepper

"Miracle-Boy Matinez should be charged with attempted murder."

it was a woman, not a man.

  • Gnomie

    Miracle-Bitch then?

  • Clarice City

    The win!

  • Clarice City

I know, I realized that as soon as I wrote it, but it was already submitted. Correction: Miracle Dog Trainer Martinez

  • Clarice City

I meant to say, I feel sorry for the nice people that rescue pits because they get stigmatized for trying to help and animal that has earned a really bad reputation (and probably rightfully so when you consider the CDC reports on dog bite related deaths).

A week ago a really thugy, just weirdly quiet guy brought his unneutered pit bull into the dog run at the Hudson River park, and I heard from another one of the dog run regulars the next day that just after I left the pit malled another dog and it had to go to the hospital. Of course, everyone was yelling at weird thugy guy and he didn't lift a finger, so apparently they called the cops. Don't know what happend to the dog, but surely this could have been prevented by the scummy owner.

There definately seems to be a type of person who use these dogs to scare and intimidate people in the same way that carring a loaded weapon would.

  • Rocknrope

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why they call it the "fatal funnel."

  • Liam

People need to learn how to control their animals. Of course the cops are going to try to shoot it, what would you do?

  • hotstepper

"The pit bull's owner, who police say deliberately set the dogs on the cops..."

according to johnny law, she was controlling the dog...as a weapon.

  • mocanlagunas

sadly it's the dog who died and not the owner...

  • NannyState

Exactly. Shoot the owner...and the nasty dog.

  • hotstepper

hopefully that crazy bitch milagros martinez will be charged with assaulting a police officer and also animal cruelty for using the dog as a weapon. they should check the immigration status of her and the other apartment occupants while they're at it.

  • Gothamist_Cynic

Sounds like the cops had bad aim.

  • TheKlaus

That first paragraph ends pretty abruptly... kind of a cliffhanger, Chung!
