No Whole Foods For Gowanus

2009_07_wholefood.jpg Back in 2006, Whole Foods held a groundbreaking ceremony for its first location in Brooklyn, in Gowanus on Third Street. Now, the high-end supermarket chain is abandoning those plans. Brooklyn the Borough reports that a Whole Foods spokesperson said, “At this juncture we do not have immediate plans to open a new store in Brooklyn but do hope to be there someday soon." The Brooklyn Paper also mentions that a spokesperson "suggested that the land would be sold." The demise of Whole Foods had been rumored for a while, given the polluted nature of the area, and there was opposition to the size of the proposed parking lot.

I called this shit right after they announced it. Where's my prize?

At the new Whole Foods in Gowanus. Now piss off, hipster!

maybe it's just me, but I hate going into any Whole Foods... sensory overload!

The one in Union Square always brings me very close to either having a seizure of flying into an uncontrollable rage.

Needless to say I haven't been there in 3 years.

Was hoping to get a job there...

Not surprising, it's one of the few places you see crazy lines at all hours of the day.

I'm not surprised given the location. If they do decide to open a store in Brooklyn, a downtown location, perhaps on Atlantic Ave. would be much better. BTW, we're also still waiting for our 1st Apple store.

Atlantic Yards? Next to the olde timey arena?

In other overpriced grocery news, the new Whole Foods at Columbus and 97th has a sign out saying it'll be open on August 27.

Will they take food stamps? I don't know anyone on westside who will forsake Zabar's/Fairway/Citarrela/ Barzinni's/Westside/Gourmet Garage (just ot mention a few . . .) for this overpriced/overhyped suburban excuse for a market. Who's going to go over to 97 and Columbus except the fools in that new building? The better start marketing to the folks in the projects!

They like college neighborhoods. You get an abundant supply of airheaded hottie employees and deep-pocked academic types who insist on organic. It'll be massively successful.
