Rep. Peter King (R-Long Island), who is eyeing a 2010 Senate run, posted a YouTube video in which he rails against the coverage of late music legend Michael Jackson. He says, "Let's knock out the psychobabble. He was a pervert, a child molester; he was a pedophile. And to be giving this much coverage to him, day in and day out, what does it say about us as a country? I just think we're too politically correct."
King gives his remarks outside the American Legion Hall in Wantagh, complaining that teachers, cops, and firefighters rarely get the attention that celebrities do. King said, "I've seen so many good people the last few days, who aren't going to get credit for anything and then I see this guy, who's really a lowlife, and he's being treated like a hero of civilization... No one wants to stand up and say we don't need Michael Jackson. He died, he had some talent, fine. He may have been a good singer, he did some dancing. Bottom line is, would you let your child or grandchild be in the same room with Michael Jackson? What are we glorifying him for?"

Nobody's denying his talent or contributions to music, as I clearly said in my comment. As you say, we have seen a lot of child stars go down in flames. Was his mistreated as a kid? Surely, but so were a hell of a lot of other people. Maybe MJ should have had a word with Diana Serra Cary, who was a child star who was put through hell in the 20s, or David Rothenberg, who was set on fire by his dad; or really anyone else who had an anonymous childhood filled with substantial trauma.
It doesn't mitigate the fact that as King said, there are people out there making a difference every day and world events which deserve much more attention than one tortured artist. I'm a teacher. I come into close contact with about 80 to 100 kids a day. In my small way I'm trying to make a difference in the lives of those kids that goes beyond a song or a world record. Hopefully someday, when Michael Jackson's music is ignored, some grandparent will say to a grandchild "I had a teacher once who said..." Michael did TONS of great things while he was alive! This guy Peter King is a total asshole. No one really cares about his opinion. Hes an OLD ASS WHITE GUY who didn't grow up listening to Michael so he will never "GET IT". I grew up in the 80's. I loved Michael then and I love him now. I would have let him around my children anytime. Peter King you do not know Michael personally and so I don't think you Peter King have a right to say who or who he was not. He did tons of great things for MANY charities! He supported our troops. He was proven innocent! I hate that people try to compare OJ to Michael. COME ON! This is two totally different circumstances. I've been really disappointed in our elected officials lately, very disappointed. It's refreshing to finally see one standing up and speaking out in a practical, value oriented manner. He affected the lives of millions by bringing his message of racial and social equality through music. He loved and we loved him back.
