Tonight, the HudsonRiver will be the scene for this year's Macy's 4th of July Fireworks. Six barges are set up in the water between 24th and 50th Streets— at approximately 9 p.m., 45,000 shells will explode 1000 feet into the air and some will even skim the water. The best viewing spots along the Hudson (on the NYC side) are anywhere below 59th Street along 12th Avenue—but there are specific access points on 11th Avenue: 24th Street, 26th-30th Streets, 34th Street, 40th-44th Streets, 47th-52nd Streets, and 54th-57th Streets. There is very limited viewing north of 59th Street on the West Side; overall, patience is key! Here's street closure info and subway and bus travel tips from the MTA. And you can share your fireworks photographs with us by tagging them "gothamist" on Flickr or emailing us at tips(at)gothamist(dot)com .

stupid jersey stealing all the fireworks.
Yes, how come the fireworks were moved from the center of New York City to its boundary?
It was *AWESOME* !!!
Happy 4th of July everyone. :)

I was misguided into believing that tonight's fireworks were for the people of NYC. I went to 14th Street and 12th Avenue. I couldn't get across, so I started walking north up 10th Avenue. Every block west of 10th Avenue was blocked to pedestrian traffic. Cops told us to go to 23rd. When we went to 23rd, we were told to go to keep moving. I asked a policemen where we could go to get to the waterfront? I him that we were told to go to 23rd. He said that he was told to send us to 25th street and then admitted that we would then probably be sent further. At 24th street we stayed where we were because it was 9:20pm. We heard a great deal of the fireworks and saw not much, until the ending section.
It was shocking to me that traffic was was going up and down all of the avenues. Half way through the fireworks two vans of cops took off.
The only highlight was that a couple in the crowd got engaged and we all were part of that.
I'm so glad that my city officials want a third shot at the election. Tonight is just another reason for change.
The fireworks are put on by Macy's not the city.
The only people I saw getting into the blocked streets were off-duty cops flashing their badges, unless undercover cops carry around lawn chairs. It was a disgrace. Everyone was herded into the few streets which were open. I hope Jersey residents were treated more humanely than NYC residents.
I was at 24th street too. The view was blocked by the buildings and a bridge. The fireworks weren't all that impressive either.
Sounds to me that you went to the site way too late. You should have gone earlier (1.5 or 2 hours earlier) then you wouldn't have such problems.
But I went to NJ and got a great view with only 15 minutes of waiting. At the end, the cops smiled and bid everyone good bye.
The Macy's New Jersey fireworks were pretty good. If possible, they should have it in New York next year.
They will you fucking cry baby.
This was for one year only. Now pull your skirt down Nancy boy.
Stay classy.
Nice!
I entered around 43st and had a wonderful place to see the fireworks. I saw all six barges being right in front of the circle line pier.
What time did you get there? In hindsight would you have arrived sooner?
I got there around 7ish.
I listened to them on the radio. WOW! Can't wait till next year. I went Ooh and Aah through the whole event.
I watched them on the Williamsburg bridge, not quite the same but you could at least see them. That and it wasn't crowded at all.
Wow, some of you really should be ashamed by your lack of knowledge regarding your own city. The reason it was moved to the Hudson was to celebrate the 400 years of Henry Hudson's discovery of the New York Harbor and the Hudson River.

When did native americans discover the Hudson? Was it 1853 or 1907? I forget...
Actually, the Native Americans got there a good 10,000 years before Hank Hudson did (and they weren't egotistical enough to brag about "discovering" it like old Hank did)!
Good God people, some of you need a f'in history lesson!
>>>>The spectacular Macy's July 4th fireworks display is moving across town in 2009. To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the exploration of the Hudson River by Henry Hudson, Macy’s will stage a showstopping pyrotechnic show over the Hudson River instead of the East River this year.
The Macy's July 4th fireworks display originally made its debut on the Hudson River in 1958 before becoming an East River tradition in 1976.
