Ruth Madoff Left Apartment With Just A "Straw Bag"

2009_05_rmadoff.jpg A couple more details from the U.S. Marshals' seizure of Bernard and Ruth Madoff's $7 million East 64th Street penthouse. According to the AP, "Disgraced financier Bernard Madoff's wife asked to stay in her $7 million Manhattan penthouse and wanted to take a fur coat with her before federal marshals seized the property. A federal official informed of Ruth Madoff's departure from her apartment Thursday tells The Associated Press that when marshals said she couldn't take her coat, she left carrying just a straw bag." However, her lawyer tells the Post, "This cheap effort to smear Ruth Madoff is meritless. And it was she who forfeited the furs last Friday as the publicly filed stipulation states." And the marshals do say she left voluntarily with all the apartment's contents there, including "$18,000 worth of bedding and $382,000 in rugs and curtains."

She may not have known what her husband was up to. That kinda irks me. Mind you, she's still got a few million in the bank so really... she's no worse for the wear. Those of us living paycheck to paycheck are hard on sympathy.

7 million dollars for a penthouse on the UES that isn't west of lexington ave? i'd say it's worth 4 million now tops.

Did any of the federal marshals think to check what was in the straw bag?

Some Depends and a couple wigs?

    2.5 million dollars in cash?

If she came over here to stay for a few nights, I'd be happy that she had her own bedding. The rug would stay in the hallway though.

I don't think that used bedding is necessarily worth the same as the price paid for it. Maybe the novelty aspect (Madoff's pillowcase!) adds back value tho'.
