Some Windsor Terrace residents say they're fed up with the NYPD's failure to do anything about the late night cacophony from skateboarders in Bartel-Pritchard Square, at the intersection of Prospect Park West and Prospect Park Southwest. So they reached out to City Councilmember Bill de Blasio, who held a community meeting last night in an attempt to resolve the age old problem of skateboarding, adolescence, and rowdiness. Local resident Jim Rallis tells YourNabe that on the night of June 13th, the teens were so obstreperous that he called the police. When they didn’t respond quickly enough, he says, "I went down there to tell them to be quiet and one of them pulled a box−cutter out and put it against my body."
Rallis says cops let the Carroll Gardens teen go, and he "just wants the police to do their job." Part of the problem is that Prospect Park is covered by the 78th Precinct, while Prospect Park South West is patrolled by the 72nd Precinct. Rallis tells YourNabe, "You call and one command thinks the other command is responsible." Another part of the problem is that, as an unidentified officer at the 78th Precinct puts it, "There’s not a lot you can do about kids riding on skateboards." But Rallis insists, "My complaint is not about the skateboarders — it’s about my quality of life." He says drinking, drug use, and drug-selling is widespread in the square, which is where 17-year-old Sharif Abdallah died earlier this year after a brawl in the park.
According to the Brooklyn Paper, 78th Precinct Deputy Inspector John Argenziano told residents, "We will put more people there, we will look at the situation," but he noted that since January his precinct has issued 47 violations to individuals caught inside Prospect Park after the 1 a.m. curfew, and 17 of them were in the Bartel-Pritchard Square area. In defense of thrashers, skateboarder Dylan Jones says these parents just don't understand: "We skate here all the time and we never mess anything." He says the skateboarders are the ones being antagonized, and claims someone poured syrup on the steps of the monument in an attempt to discourage skaters. But according to Dylan, that just resulted in bee stings for a non-skater and a dog.

I can only speak for myself, but I've never been bothered by the skateboarders. The cars in and around the square, in terms of both noise and danger to nearby residents, are by far the bigger nuisance. Why doesn't someone hold a meeting about that?
Actually, come to think of it, this stuff about the police precincts does shed light on why the drivers constantly get away with near-murder around BPS. Living right off the square, I've never seen a single driver pulled over for anything.
agreed. kids on pieces of wood seem like the least of the parks problems. though late night noise is annoying.
It's more than just noise. Anywhere you see kids skateboarding, you'll find handrails and step edges scraped, chipped, discolored and otherwise defaced by "grinding." I've seen one monument with marble steps suddenly surrounded by bollards within the last couple of years. That ruined the look of the monument, makes it hard to get close to it to read the inscription and must have cost the city a pretty penny. And it's all because skateboarders have no respect for others. As long as they're having fun, that's all they care about.
"that just resulted in bee stings for a non-skater"
Oh snap!
I live right on the corner of Prospect Park West & 15th Street. I've never had any problems with the teens. The first commenter is right: noise from traffic and buses that use the traffic circle is a much, much bigger issue.
I think the bigger issue is people choosing which of the traffic lights on 14th or 15th they pay attention to, as most cars seem incapable of acknowledging both.
Its too bad this isnt Arizona or New Mexico or Vermont, b/c then, when this animal low life pulls out a box cutter and puts it against me, I can take out my pistol and shoot him in the face.
These Park Slope teenagers do two things really well: Skateboard and Breastfeed.
this is bullshit..... we're going to worry about "the loud skaters" and give them tickets... yet.. come the wee hours in the night.. jackass's go by with they're music all the way up and they're loud cars that have soo much bass they set other car alarms off.. but god fucking forbid we let skaters play in the road.. dont u think its a little bit better than sitting at home on the couch being fatass's? yea.. it certainly is.... damn you so called "adults" dont know what its like., and your probably more immature than teens... grow up please.. let us do what we want to for once... skate... we dont destroy anything... we dont do anything wrong except go out and get excersize.... glad we arent allowed to be fit and have fun at the same time.... you wonder why teenagers are such smart ass's? maybe this article gets the job done....
