Has the world gone mad? Gwyneth Paltrow, who once loved NYC (but lately has soured on America), is calling Spain her second home. In a recent interview she said, "Here in the United States an old building is about 17 (years old), and over there it's from 500 B.C. It's incredible." Celebs do tend to be anti-development. She also noted that people enjoy life more there, as opposed to New Yorkers, who run around too much punching the keys on their BlackBerries. Meanwhile, Miss Manhattan herself, Sarah Jessica Parker might be moving to Brooklyn! Rumor has it that her and the family may have purchased Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany's double-wide, 9-bedroom townhouse at 17 Prospect Park West (pictured). Don't worry Manhattan, you'll still have Madonna and her chickens.

paltrow and parker in the same story? move aside bran, this story was all the encouragement i needed to get the bowels moving. graphic!
Gwyneth does nothing for Spain on the Road again. She's not even hot to look at.
Claudia Bassols, on the other hand...what a dish, if you know what I mean.
Gwyneth Paltrow is unattractive and way overrated as an actress. Stay in Spain lady, nobody likes you here either.
For all of her complaining she'll never give up her American passport or capitalist first world lifestyle.
I don't disagree that she won't give up her passport, but last time I checked Spain was also a capitalist and developed country.
Why should she give up her American passport? With her Brit husband and children she can have EU citizenship as well.
Bitch was born was third base with a silver spoon in her mouth.
so apparently ms. paltrow hates the native american indians now? and she's ripping the indians for not building structures at 500 BC? sorry gwyneth but teepees haven't really stood the test of time, you are right.
kind of strange anyway since the building i live in was built in 1886. and last time i checked 123 years > 17 years.
Gwyneth needs to go on a road trip to the remains of the Mound Builders, the Anasazi, Cahokia, Pueblo Bonito, etc. if she's so enamored by ancient buildings.
"her and the family may have purchased..."? Come on, gothamist. Get some decent copy editors.
"Here in the United States an old building is about 17 (years old), and over there it's from 500 B.C. It's incredible."
Strikingly similar mentality to every snotty NYU girl who spends half of her semesters abroad banging dudes for blow.
A house you can actually live in from 500bc? i don't think so.
Agreed. She clearly pulled the dates out of her ass in the midst of a sangria-induced haze. 17 years? What New Yorker would claim a building from 1992 is old? And how many buildings in Europe outside of Greece date back to 500 BC?
I don't care if you dump on our city, but at least get your architectural history right. Good lord.
I think SJP would be most at home in a carriage house...
Burn!
I wonder who ner NEIGH-bors will be...perhaps a philly or a colt???
With the kids, it's a foal house.
I know that Hollywood dimbulbs have never had to be intelligent, but let's review:
United States = July 4, 1776 or 233 years old. It's kind of hard to have a building date back to 500 BC when you're only a teenager as far as world cultures go.
Besides, the uniqueness of the United States is that people who had very little came here. Were they supposed to drag the Elgin Marble with them when they came? Builders in the old days used wood because it was plentiful and easy to get, but obviously wood doesn't last thousands of years.
Well, isn't that really her point? It's not likely she's really talking about old buildings vs. new, but about long cultural history vs. short using the age of typical buildings as an illustration. And it's also clear that the "17 years" vs. "500 BC" is hyperbole, not her actual belief.
I've never been moved to defend Paltrow's scatterbrained ideas, but at least let the criticism be somewhat well grounded.
Paltrow made her millions here. Now that she is a rapidly cooling movie actress, the tables have turned?
The US isn't really a young country. We've had the same continuous government for over 200 years. Compare that to Japan, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia, China, India, ect.
Another myth is so many structure in Europe are old. Not true. So may of the charming places I've seen were in fact rebuilt after a war, or a GREAT FIRE of xxxx, flattened everything.
17 PPW was actually sold nearly a year ago and construction and renovation has been going on inside for several months. It should be easy enough to see who the deed was registered to and for how much. I don't recall reading or hearing anything about SJP and MB being the buyers, but maybe they bought it under an assumed or corporate name.
Barcelona does have buildings/structures that old from the Roman days that I saw for myself a few months ago. I can't hate, I'd rather live in Spain myself.
not from 500 bce they don't. The roman empire was barely a blip at that point.
Thank you. 500 BCE is early-mid Greek era. To be fair, Spain does have some insanely hot architecture.
Gwyneth Paltrow is the same person who began broadcasting that she believes that shampoo causes cancer and we are all giving babies cancer by exposing them to the evil shampoo bubbles.
As always, Gwen is an ambassador of culture and science with the worldly perspective of a hollywood entertainer with a highschool education. She makes movies like Shallow Hal. How is she not the authority on everything?
Paltrow is wack.
Parker? Who cares about horse face?
Guys, I think this is all besides the point.
The main point is, why exactly do her opinions matter in any way, shape, or form?
Gwenth needs to learn to STFU. Seems like every time she opens her mouth lately, some bone-headed statement comes out.
who cares what GP likes or hates tell her to stay in Spain, it does not even look like she eats food ... why is she even on that show?! Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson & so many others with talent have to die young & these morans will outlive all of us !!

these morans will outlive all of us
I hope you're trying to be funny.
just another reason that actors should be banned from speaking off script. sean penn i'm looking at you.
hmmm... does the rain in Spain fall as much as it does in NYC? I suspect there's more sunshine there.
The more we respond/post to what Gwyneth Paltrow does, the delusion that what she says/thinks/does/acts/"sings" matters. Let's not indulge her. The buildings in Western Europe that ARE from 500 B.C. aren't lived in, typically.
Like castles in Spain, her big fucking mouth is all that will remain.

Nobody cares how long the govt has been around when they speak of a country's age. All those countries you have listed are culturally older than the US by at least 700 years.
