Time to bring back an updated rain graph. It came down to the wire, but yesterday evening's intense shower did not have what it takes to become the rainiest June ever. For the record, 10.06 inches of rain fell on Central Park, a mere 0.21 less than 2003. That's nearly triple the normal amount! One local news outlet prattled on today about how there was more rain in New York than Seattle last month, conveniently not mentioning that Seattle is almost always drier than NYC in June. Adding to the joy, last month was also the eighth coolest June since records began in 1851.
What does July have in store? For the next couple of days at least more of the same! Both the upper air and surface lows haven't moved so look for another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms this Canada Day and Thursday. Like yesterday some of this afternoon's storms could be intense. Look for highs both days in the upper 70s.
High pressure approaching the region should begin to clear things out on Friday. Saturday, oh my, sunny, dry and warm! Sunday is looking the same. We may break down in tears if that happens. It is not yet clear if rain will return on Monday.

A half an inch! Mother Nature, you huge tease!
Uh, Jen, 0.21 inches....yeah, that's not half an inch.
Amended (it's been a LONG day): A quarter of an inch! Mother Nature, you huge tease!
Haha, hey wait a minute, that's cheating!
Anyway, we all know the saying, first is the worst, second is the best, third is the one with a hairy chest!
It's good to be #2!
Yesterday when I got caught in the downpour on my way home from work, I was content with the thought that we would be breaking the record. But no, soaking wet for nothing.
I had the same reaction, except I had an umbrella so I didn't get soaking wet.
Seattle is drier than NYC on an annual basis, as well. The whole 'rainy Seattle' thing is really a myth.
It's more like grey Seattle.
100% true. I grew up in the upper midwest and the weather there is also worse than Seattle.
i'm in seattle now. it's gorgeous. sunny and warm but with a cool breeze. none of that inhaling rank subway platform nast (2nd Ave F/V, ahem) while trickles of sweat course from the back of your head, snake down your spine and get absorbed by your unders. for example.
I wonder why the graph shows no precipitation for Sunday the 28th. I got absolutely drenched in a downpour in the late afternoon. I would guess it was about .21 inches of rain!
Where were you? The showers were really spotty on Sunday. It was sunny the entire time I was on Governor's Island. Same thing happened yesterday afternoon. I was stuck in torrential rains around Fort Lee. Had the storm moved just a mile east we would have broken the record.
June rain 2nd place id like the Mets of 2008 & 2007...couldn't get the job done. Thanks Mets for raining on the parade.
And 2006 is a total 'A-Rod' June. Great start and all but disappears in the end (postseason).
Ditto on Politburo, Seattle might have more overcast days in the winter, but the actual volume of rain is usually pretty small - misting rather than real rain, much like London.
Ha! The first draft of the post actually had a Mets swoon remark. Then Jen sent me the Times link so I went with the Seattle angle.
Are there numbers available for NYC as a whole (not just Central Park)? An aggregation of all of the highest rainfall in all 5 boroughs? Seems like this would be a better way to measure how rainy "the City" was.
Our only offical measuring stations in the 'city' are Central Park, Laguardia Airport, and JFK airport.
