Lov Gov Sanford Loved In NYC, Hamptons

2009_07_lovegovms.jpg In an interview with the Associated Press, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford was "teary-eyed" when he "admitted he met with his mistress in the Hamptons and New York City, describing...the details of encounters that he said stretch back to 2001." In fact, Sanford gets all The Bridges of Madison County about it, "I was frightened and I was scared, and I knew the consequences. This was a whole lot more than a simple affair. This was a love story. A forbidden one, a tragic one, but a love story at the end of the day." While he met mistress Maria Belen Chapur in Uruguay in 2001, they met again in 2004 at a NYC cafe—while he was in town for the 2004 Republican Convention—"It was like catching up with a great, old friend. I remember there was an older couple sitting to our right, and I remember them watching us, in the way that we interacted. They could see a spark." Sanford didn't speculate about his 20-year marriage but did say, "I will be able to die knowing that I had met my soul mate."

    Oh Gaaaawd. [rolls eyes]

His life is a frickin' chick flick. Does he actually expect women of the 18-59 demographic to swoon and sigh while he regales them with this sinful, lascivious, dangerous, heart renching, spellbinding, epic saga of forbidden f#@%ing...er...I mean love...that's right love.

  • ANGRYGOD11

If one of Sanford's top staffers decided to just take off for a few days without telling anyone, would they get fired (like 99% of us) or a hug and a beer?

  • NannyState

Did they do the Lambada? Did they complete their "forbidden love" with the Forbidden Dance?

  • Trilby16

This guy looks exactly like Tim Blake Nelson in Oh, Brother Where Art Thou. Check it out:

  • hotstepper

    blasphemy!

  • Dirk

Seriously, the guy needs to shut up about his mistress. Has he completely lost his mind?

I really feel sorry for his wife and kids.

  • Atomische

Mark ... we also want to know when you first did it, and in what positions!

  • Tgirl

"Cosmo, you're gonna die, just like everybody else..."

  • Atomische

Mark ... we also want to know when you first did it, and in what positions!

  • hotstepper

    did he wear socks?

  • Mr Mel

"admitted he met with his mistress in the Hamptons and New York City"

Assuming he wont withstand this scandal and will lose his Governorship, we can expect him up here, where he will become part of the party scene and eventually marry a local Hispanic.

  • Endless Ike

how unfortunate for his wife and kids...but if that's how he feels, he's got to follow his heart.

Life's to short for regrets, let the chips fall where they may, and best of luck, d00d

  • JenChungsBaby

I agree. Best thing this guy could do is resign as governor and move to Argentina with nothing but the shirt on his back. Leave everything for the kids and follow his passion.

  • militza

in some ways this type of behavior doesn't surprise me. if anything it has been quite common in history. I remember reading somewhere that the mistresses of various kings and officials, were seated in the balaconies of events and other ceremonies.

  • Nyctini11

Yeah but people were also commonly beheaded, stoned in public, etc. This guy is humiliating himself & the family that has stood by him.

  • militza

yes, I know that. we've evolved. I'm just saying there's a precedent for this type of thing.

  • Rocknrope

Hey Mark, you do realize that your kids can read, right?

  • Brooklynbobby

He needs to sell this story to Lifetime or Oxygen.

  • hotstepper

these old guy politicians baring their souls in front of the camera has got to stop. where's the old school bull-headed confidence in your actions? "yeah i cheated and it's none of your @%&*ing business."

they should boot him for being a nancy, not for cheating.

  • nicemarmot

This dude is batshit even by politician standards.

  • Cautious Pessimist

Sanford 12 years ago: Bill Clinton should be impeached for abusing the public's trust.

Sanford today: I deserve to keep my job because I love the woman I committed adultery with, despite the fact that, unlike Clinton, I also used taxpayer dollars to fund my trips to see her.

Typical GOP hypocritical bullshit. But hey, at least it wasn't a 15 year old male congressional aide, or some dude in an airport bathroom this time. They're improving!

  • EastRiver

Clinton was impeached for lying under oath. If Sanford resigns or is forced out it should be because he went AWOL for three days.

  • SP

What's your point? He lied to to his staff and to the public about what he was doing during that week. On top of that he is a self righteous bible thumper, who seeks to legislate the morality of others, and yet can't even live up to his own extremist standards. This is just another case of IOKIYAR. Hypocritical GOP piece of shit is a perfect description.

  • EastRiver

My point was that Bill Clinton was not impeached for "abusing the public's trust". I see that you're still reading things that aren't there.

  • junecarter

Perhaps you should check your own post before you start slamming someone for "reading something that isn't there". Your first post states "Clinton was impeached...". Uhm, no he wasn't.

  • EastRiver

Uh, yeah he was. Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives on two of the four charges brought: perjury and obstruction of justice. He was later acquitted in his trial by the Senate. Thanks for playing.

  • Cautious Pessimist

I should have linked this in my original post.

    http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=7930748&page=1

"In 1998, Sanford was a Republican congressman from South Carolina when he demanded "moral clarity" from Clinton and called on him to resign. "Very damaging stuff. This one's pretty cut and dried," Sanford told The Post and Courier in September 1998. "I think it would be much better for the country and for him personally [to resign]." So far, Sanford has not indicated that he has any plans to resign as governor."

Also, SP's comment above is exactly what I mean. He lied about where he was and who he was with. If we're talking about morals here, what is the difference between lying under oath and lying any other time?

Sanford voted for Clinton's impeachment as a member of the House because he thought Clinton was an adulterous liar. Now that Sanford has admitted to be an adulterous liar (who misused taxpayer funds on top of it all), he thinks it is the right thing to keep his job?

How the fuck is that not the definition of a hypocritical scumbag asshole?

  • r1b2

It's great that he's sharing his endless love with the media. But how tragic for his wife and kids to have to endure this. And how classless for this wussbag to spew this tale of deciet like it's a romance novel.

  • JenChungsBaby

I like when he said that's he trying to fall back in love with his wife.

Yeah. Good luck with that one Governor. It sure sounds like you mean it.

  • Nyctini11

    Exactly....TMI!

This is so low class & disgusting on his part. His wife stood by him, he ells her he wants to make it work, and now all he can do is talk about this soul mate, etc etc. Scumbag.

  • Potty Boy

Agreed - pure dirtbag. He should go and fall on a punji stick.

  • Qraymond

It really sounds a lot like he's talking about gay marriage.

  • John_Matrix

this is clearly the greatest love story ever told.

is he sure he's not gay?
