UPDATE: Woman Says Misogynistic Cop Arrested Her, Punched Her, Grabbed Breasts for Carrying Pug in Subway

Greenpoint resident Chrissie Brodigan says she was riding on the L train between Bedford and First Avenue when her pug, who has health problems, overheated and began vomiting in the tote bag she was carrying him in. As she was leaving the subway station with the dog in her arms, she says a police officer's attempt to issue her a ticket turned ugly, and when she became upset the cop began saying, "If you're going to act like a woman I'm going to treat you like a woman." [We've updated with photos of Brodigan's arrest. July 1 update: A new post with details about another witness's account is here. ]

According to Brodigan, the arresting officer's name is Witriol (badge number 942838). After seeing a photo, she identified him to us as Joel Witriol, who in 2006 became New York's first Hasidic cop. Brodigan, 32, says Witriol would not accept her explanation that she was carrying the pug because it was sick, and she believes that the disturbed crowd that gathered to witness the arrest only made him angrier. She tells us, "He punched me in the back (there are bruises), he handcuffed me, and in the scuffle grabbed my breasts and pinched them."

Melissa Randazzo, a speech language pathologist who lives in Williamsburg, witnessed the arrest and tells us, "something about it seemed very wrong. The cop's tone seemed really inappropriate and he kept saying things like, 'Are you going to act like a woman?' She tried to walk away, and then he grabbed her and pushed her against the wall outside the turnstile." Randazzo ran up to the street level to call 911 to, as she says, "call the cops" on Witriol, and soon some 20 officers had descended into the Bedford station. They then ordered the witnesses to disperse. Brodigan describes what happened after she was arrested:

They took my pug and he told me he was taking him to the pound where he would be "put down." I was taken to the J stop headquarters. I wasn't allowed to call a lawyer and I was put in a cell with handcuffs on with two other women who spit on me and hit me in the head, because they weren't in handcuffs and I was crying so much it bothered them. I was given 3 tickets: failure to produce ID, disorderly conduct, and failure to have dog in a container. I have a court date in August. I asked for a pen to write the badge numbers down before I left and they refused to give me a pen and covered up their badges. My pug was returned. They had him behind their desks and were playing with him."

The NYPD press office declined to verify any information about the arrest; the spokesman told us that because these are misdemeanor charges, they "usually don't hear anything about that." Brodigan adds that, "So many people saw what happened that I just would really like for everyone to submit complaints, because this man shouldn't be able to do this to women—to anyone."

So, did this Hasid cop get special permission from his Reb to be allowed to touch a woman other than his wife???
  • byways1
There is only one conclusion to be drawn here: don't live in, visit, or have anything to do with a city where people take their sick pets on the already filthy and congested subways.
  • KismetNYC

It's an old story, but I feel moved to say I noticed that many comments were making a jump logically: "Cop is violent and inappropriate with a woman, cop is Hasidic, therefore, Hasidic men are violent and inappropriate with women."  If the cop were Irish, or Black, I doubt this logical error would pass undetected.  There is a lot of reflexive dislike for Hasidim just because they set themselves apart as religious people and chosen people and when they do shitty things, being very conspicuously Hasidic, it looks really bad.

But I think there was a lot of reflexive anti-Hasidic attitude in the comments.  Are all cops bad?  Are all Hasidim bad? Making "all" statements that are not true does not solve social problems.

  • lolaalex
No... THIS cop, THIS Hasid is inconsiderate of women.  I was raised among the Hasids in Boro Park, and for there were definite problems.  Bus after bus going down the street BEEEPING for the late kids.  The woman next door to us NEVER had her kids ready to go.  The area is dirty and smells.  That's not prejudicial, just a plain fact.  Basically, the majority are inconsiderate to the goy.  Once in a while, you will find a refreshing individual who doesn't let his religion from wanting to be part of life and the people who are living around him.

What a bunch of lowlife looser. Jerky you asshole-anti-Semite why don’t you climb out of your fucking Nazi bunker and join the twenty first century. The condescending diatribe being spewed by liberal anarchists helps explain why idiots like Limbaugh and Savage are so popular. Here is a young man trying to walk a thin line, a Chasid trying his best to be part of the melting pot that is NYC, and he is subject to the abuse of a bunch of scum. THE GUY WAS TRYING TO DO HIS JOB!!! He groped her boob, bullshit! Who would want to touch that droopy bitch? You all know that she would have reacted with much more respect had it been a clean-cut Irish cop. You’re all ready to attack Hasidim because you feel judged in their presence. Don’t blame an entire community because of your own issues. The only people passing judgment are you guys. You’ll respect the rights of Homosexuals, transsexuals, children, dogs and goats, but a Chasid trying to earn an honest living gets only abuse. This woman would be banished from any community of true liberals!

  • skazm

You buncha douchebags could save the NYC court systems a lot of money if you hire yourselves out as one man judge and juries - buncha Nazis, I hope you get thrown in ovens yourselves - I bet he took her blood for the matza this year also...

  • I am shocked and revolted by the hate and vitriol being spewed here. While the question if such ad homonym attacks against Hassidic Jews is debatable, the fact, however, that they are vulgar, ignorant, hateful and offensivelies is undeniable.

Those who partake in such comments need to rethink their entire stance on what it means to be open minded and progressive.

The fact that people that such hate and rancor is displayed here is a discredit to both the Gothamist and its posters.

Why was she riding the subway anyway? There are plenty of vets in Greenpoint/Williamsburg.

There are also plenty of restaurants, stores, jobs, places to live, etc. Why should anyone ever leave their neighborhood? We should all stop taking the subway all the time and stick to where we live!

can i file charges against her for disturbing the peace on the internet?! :p

  • oops I meant she even admitted on her twitter that she lost control.

  • like i said before: one crazy lady, one pissed off cop.

She has no credibility. She even admitted. Have you seen her twitter? She comes off as a bit nuts to me. I mean we all are to some degree....

  • RegoParker

Yep, saw it, though she deleted her twitter page today.

I wouldn't be so fast to characterize the cop's behavior. In the photos, submitted by one of her supporters (one could take away from that those are the photos which support her case the most) - she appears to be aggressive, stamping her right foot while in handcuffs, and apparently shouting at one of the other officers. In another photo, she's on the ground.

In none of the photos does the officer appear the least bit agitated or pissed off. He looks like he'd like to be somewhere else.

  • RegoParker

    Chrissie Brodigan's stories keep changing.

She is trying to paint herself as a victim and in her most recent storytelling neglects an awful lot of the facts which she'd previously admitted.

She has admitted here and on her other sites (which she's since deleted - wonder why?) that:

    - She was verbally abusive to the police officer. She admits to calling him an "asshole" as part of her diatribe of insults.

    - She now claims to have had a panic attack.

    - She 'doesnt remember' if she hurled anti-Semitic insults at the officer. She said this many times, and now 'remembers' that she did not. Uh huh.

    - She admits to resisting arrest, sits on the floor to avoid arrest and then claims brutality because her upper arms have small bruises - bruises which were caused by her forcing the officers to lift her from the floor.

    - She initially claimed that the officer "twisted her breasts". When confronted about that claim on another site, she said, "he MAY have been excessive". So, maybe that didn't happen. And maybe he wasn't excessive.

    - She now spins this into an anti-woman thing and sends her story and photos to a feminist blog. Anti-woman, because after calling the police officer an 'asshole', refusing all of his instructions, being aggressive and belligerent - he had the nerve to ask her to behave like a lady. Gasp - that'll set back the cause a few hundred years, huh ladies?

    - Earlier in the day, she claimed to have been injured by other inmates who punched her and spit on her in jail. (Bringing into question where she got any of her alleged injuries.) This was all forgotten by the time she was on TV.

CHRISSIE - YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO CREDIBILITY AND HAVE SELECTIVE MEMORY AND MEMORY LOSS. YOU OMIT FACTS AND SPIN TO SOLICIT SYMPATHY FOR A SHITSTORM YOU CREATED.

APOLOGIZE TO THE OFFICER, PAY YOUR FINE AND HOPE THIS FADES AWAY.

Shame on all of you for convicting the police officer based upon this transparent and obviously bullshit story.

  • KoosSeaver

A witness claims that the police officer (Witriol) asked 'Are you going to act like a woman?'which leads me to believe that the woman (Brodigan) was NOT acting like a woman.

According to witness, Viane Delgado,Brodigan hurled some ugly, racists remarks at Jewish officer Witriol: "You f---ing Jew, you're not even human . . . Jewish people think they own everthing".

If you ask me, Brodigan sounds just like that 88-year-old white supremacist who killed an African-American security guard when he barged into The Holocaust Museum armed to kill innocent people.

Thank you, Officer Witriol, for exposing and arresting another white supremacist.

    Go Mets!

  • lolaalex
HUH???  This is about a power hungry cop who didn't show this woman an ounce of understanding.  She was EXITING the station.  Just let her go.  If she was coming in and trying to board a train without having the dog in the bag, then maybe he could stop her at that point, but not when she's obviously leaving.

So our supposed witness admits to being out o the subway station to call 911 and comes back to find brodigan in handcuffs. Which of course means that our witness was NOT there the whole time and therefore not in a position to say if brodigan made any anti-Semitic remarks or resisted arrest. Of course you didn't see her resist arrest if you were outside on the street and came back to find her in handcuffs.

Again, not to excuse any unprofessional conduct on the part of the police but this witness did not see the whole incident and thus her statement is incomplete at best. It's clear that brodigan was not "railed" by the system for no reason; in fact she has already admitted to breaking the law for which she was issued a summons.

What I found most interesting about the witness statement was her clarification of what witriol said to brodigan. "Act like a woman and I'll treat you like a woman" as opposed to a whiny child, presumably. That actually lends credence to the Hasidic gentleman's comment earlier in this thread whereby he theorized that the cop was basically telling brodigan that he would treat her like an adult if she'd act like an adult. I found that theory a little far-fetched at first but thanks to the witness's clarification as to what was said, that actually seems somewhat plausible now.

I did leave the station to call 911 in hopes of getting another cop to diffuse the situation. I did miss some of what happened but my boyfriend (who took the photos) was still down in the station making sure Witriol didn't harm Chrissie any further. He did not hear any anti-semitic remarks. No matter what Chrissie did or did not do cops do not have the right to use excessive force and inappropriate sexist language.

I feel that what happened once other cops arrived even more alarming than the encounter with Witriol. Please be aware fellow NYers that this kind of thing can happen to ANYONE on a bad day.

This is a direct quote from her blog(bio) http://chrissiebrodigan.wordpress.com/about/

"Community is my lifeline, and as a long-time sufferer of social awkwardness and anxiety, I've developed a gift for listening, which helps me help other people find their people." it goes on to say... "Other adjectives:" ( describing herself) "irreverant[sic] (have we met?), clumsy(have you seen me walk?), authentic(have I offended you recently?), and full of hope(have you ever hugged me- it's almost transferrable)."

She comes off as a bit of a pill already just by reading her bio. The NYPD isn't at all free of blame either but hell with crime rates going down and the city with probably (correct me please) largest police force in the country, what's a bored cop to do?? But enforce the small laws ( dogs on subways, sitting on steps, drinking beers on stoops, smoking a joint in the park etc..). She should have had an ID, the basic rule as a citizen in this country, and been a lot less reactionary to the request to have her dog placed in the soiled tote bag. She ever hear about handi wipes??

I don't have enough information to have an opinion on who's at fault here yet, but I think it's funny how some people (that means you, spiritross) seem to think that because someone has the balls/guts to protest treatment they think is unfair from cops (or "mouth off," as it was put), that they automatically think they are "special," and are "brats" and that if they were kickass real New Yorkers that they would take any and all abuse from cops. Because, you know, that's what savvy, street-wise New Yorkers do. Let cops fuck with them.

What spineless, confused and sad drivel.

  • spiritross

While Ii don't care what your fantasy of kickass real New Yorkers are - the reality is they would probably schmooze with the cop and laugh about someone they both know.

But my experience since I have friends that are cops - the last thing they need is someone that thinks its their egotistical given right to rage against the machine when they don't even understand what they are doing wrong.

Nice hate at the end by the way.

    But please

It's also worth noting that on Twitter, chrissieb talked about her battle with cystic fibrosis. One of the symptoms of cystic fibrosis is easy bruising.

  • SpoonyLou

I WAS THERE AND I am so incredibly disappointed in some of my fellow New Yorkers who are so quick to judge and name-call another citizen for standing up for herself after being treated unfairly. I've seen so many incidents on the subway and in the city and I just mind my business. But when I passed by Chrissie and the "officer" in the station something hit me the wrong way. Let's just take the NYPD mantra "Courtesy, Professionalism, Respect" which is emblazoned on all their vehicles. No matter what happens, it is the officer's responsibility to uphold this tenet. This is not what happened. I witnessed a cop spew sexist comments and use excessive force on a woman. I exited the subway station and called 911 because I was worried for this girl and her dog as they were being man-handled by an officer of the law. I was under the impression that when other cops arrived they would see how unreasonable Witriol was and somehow diffuse the situation. Stupid me. The rest of the cops participated in the torment and public humiliation of this woman. She and her dog were clearly in distress and not one single cop could speak to her humanely and calm her down. She kept asking "What did I do?" with no answer. None of the cops would talk to me or my boyfriend as we tried to tell them what we saw happen. And for the record we heard absolutely NO ANTI-SEMITIC REMARKS. The cops would not let us give Chrissie our contact information, thus denying her the opportunity to defend herself later with eyewitness accounts. I am not surprised they covered their badges. They behaved unreasonably and excessively and should be ashamed of their behavior.

I do not believe that Chrissie behaved irrationally. If a cop was talking to me the way I heard Witriol talk to her, I would have done the same thing. He was out of line and then fed off her fear to further terrorize her. It was inappropriate and unprofessional.

    COURTESY PROFESSIONALISM RESPECT.

  • felixthecat2

I heard him tell her repeatedly to "act like a woman" and said things like "act like a woman and I'll treat you like a woman". Any way you spin that, it's inappropriate and sexist.

She was in distress and very confused about the situation. She kept asking "What did I do?" and "What about my dog?". She was treated unfairly and my boyfriend and I both witnessed this. It really could happen to anyone. People should be aware how easy it is to get railed by the system for NO REASON.

  • valeriob

Was she resisting arrest before or after you arrived?

Did she have a container for the dog?

  • SpoonyLou

She actually was not resisting arrest. He was bullying her when we walked by. I went upstairs to call 911 thinking someone would come help Chrissie and get rid of this rude and unprofessional cop. I was in shock when I came back down and she was in handcuffs. It seemed so unreasonable. She really didn't do anything wrong. I was there. And for the record she did have a carrier for the dog. The dog had puked in it on the train. She was carrying the dog as she was exiting the station so it wouldn't have to sit in its own puke.

There are 3 sides to every story....and there is certainly something more to this. I doubt this woman was a complete angel in her confrontation with the officer. Fact, an unleashed dog is illegal on MTA property, sick or not. The cop has every right to go and question this violation...and for all the people who think that it is just a lovely sick pup....there are many other people who want cops to enforce this law because maybe they have their reasons why they don't want a dog on the subway. There is just more to the story than the cop lonely instigating this whole incident.

    RUFF RIDER 'CURSED' COP

HASIDIC OFFICER IN SUBWAY CANINE FRACAS

The city's first Hasidic cop was excoriated in a anti-Semitic rant by a dog-loving subway passenger who allegedly refused to place her sick pet in an animal carrier, sources and a witness said yesterday.

Brooklyn blogger Chrissie Brodigan claimed Officer Joel Witriol went ballistic when he saw her take her pug, Dempsey, out of her purse in violation of subway regulations at around 5:30 p.m. Monday. She said he cuffed her, insulted her and roughed her up.

But a witness, Viane Delgado, said Brodigan was the one out of line. Delgado said Witriol "repeatedly" asked the woman to place the barking pug in a carrier she had. But instead, she allegedly insulted him with anti-Semitic slurs and tried to walk away.

"You f---ing Jew, you're not even human," Delgado quoted Brodigan as saying.

She repeatedly said, "Jewish people think they own everything," a source said.

    But Brodigan denied that account.

"I don't remember saying anything anti-Semitic," she said. "I do remember saying, 'Clearly, you have trouble with women.' I probably called him an a--hole."

According to her account, Witriol "said he needed to talk to me" as she was ascending a staircase at the L-line Bedford Avenue station.

"He pushed me against the wall and said, 'I need your name and ID.' "

Brodigan, 32, said that when she told Witriol she had left her wallet at work, things turned ugly.

"He pushed me against the wall and said, 'If you're gonna act like a woman, I'm gonna treat you like a woman,' " said Brodigan.

The blogger denied she had a carrying case with her and said her dog suffers from a health condition that causes it to overheat.

She claims that when she started to walk away, "he handcuffed my wrist, pushed me against the wall, punched me in the back and kicked me in the shin."

She also claimed Witriol at one point put his hands on her breasts.

Melissa Randazzo, 29, another witness, backed up Brodigan's story.

"His tone was really alarming," Randazzo said of Witriol. "The girl looked scared. She didn't look like someone who would get into trouble. Something didn't seem right about this situation."

Witriol's family would not comment on the case last night.

The NYPD said that there's no record of any impropriety on the part of Witriol and that Brodigan was given a summons for failing to identify herself and for not having a dog in a proper container.

A police source said Brodigan was belligerent and argumentative.

Brodigan claimed the cop took away her pug and threatened he'd have it "put down."

I am prohibited from solicitation by the Rules of Professional Responsibility, but speaking as an anonymous attorney, I would gladly represent this woman in a suit against the city.

You are a dirtbag SOB ambulance chaser.

    Pugs on a Train!

This is one classic liberal, looking to get compassion from her peers, through fabricating a story about that breasts and dogs were attacked, she knows the libs are very sensitive when it comes to breasts and dogs.

And I hope this bigot will end up in the thumbs where she belongs.

  • urbangal

I'm not surprised. Many Hasidic men hate women (especially their wives) and, as I recall when I was still living in NYC, the worst offenders of groping women on the subway. 90 degrees, in big wool suits, stinky, and rubbing up against you on the subway. Ick.

They are also the worst drivers - ever. I can't tell you how many times they almost creamed me while I was riding my motorcycle - seems stop signs and red lights are only for us goyum.

what's the connection between rabid feminists and anti-semitism? this is new for me, do explain.

  • Quidnam

I think it's more a matter of the natural (and mutual) animosity between feminists on the political left and religious fundamentalists of all stripes.

  • Clarice City

Also, where the fuck is Al Sharpton?

  • Adrian

he is till doin' the bump'n'grind uptown i guess.

  • Clarice City

That just made me vomit like a sick overheated pug.

  • Clarice City

So Chrissie, did he actually grab your breast and pinch them or is this an exaggeration? It seems that you're trying to smooth over some of the rather remarkable (beaten up in jail, too?) accusations you have made all over the internet.

If you are making claims of a sexual assault, you better be serious about it, because if you are not, you are diminishing the gravity of sexual assaut for all those who have acyually been a victim.

Get your damn story in line, because you're beginning to sound like an entitled finger pointing brat who is obviously going to benefit from all the media exposure, being that you're a blogger and all.

  • Eli

Yup, she was fondled and rapped while her helpless sick dog was watching....

  • valeriob

TMZ is reporting she is pregnant from the encounter!

  • Adrian

totally! photos of bruises on the boobs or it didn't happen!

" there was probably some asshattery committed by both parties. "

    Yeah, quite likely.

But it's not illegal to be obnoxious. As I said, if you have the power to arrest people and shoot people, you should be held to a higher standard.

  • hotstepper

    "She tried to walk away..."

but it is illegal to resist arrest. if you are driving and a cop pulls you over would you just drive off? the same applies when a cop stops you on foot. you lose your chance at moral indignation when you can't follow the basic rule of law.

  • jt10000

"YES! Prosecuting those who violate the law IS a good use of public resources."

There are forms of prosecution other than jail - and the associated costs of taking someone in - such as giving a summons. That's my point.

"I don't understand why you don't get this. Is it because you are an illegal? Hmm? Do you understand the words that are being discussed here? English?? Hello?"

Thanks for the paragraph above. It makes my day.

If you're intending to pursue a lawsuit related to this incident, I would highly recommend that you stop writing anything online about it.

  • Clarice City

Nope, she's probably just going to blog about and get better exposure for her carreer at the HuffPo. Nice move, Chrissie!

Would your comments be different if this was a sick baby on a stroller (which is not permitted)? Would this nasty cop treat her differently if she has a sick baby and not a sick dog? I know Hasidic think dogs are filthy and they are in general very cruel to animals. They even swing chickens in the air. sickening

  • valeriob

Here you come out of left field with chickens. CHICKENS!

It's not a sick baby, it is an allegedly sick dog.

What if? What if I just wanted to take my albino alligator on the 4 train?

We all know how you feel about jews so let's not let this post get to 300 comments.

  • felixthecat2

Valeriob, stop deflecting, not only are you homophobic but you hate animals and enjoy the misery of others. There are no alligators on the train, your remarks are very juvenile. Find one comment that states I hate jews, I am no racist. I believe all specie have the right to life and dignity.
