Summer Streets Coming Back Bigger in August

As promised, last year's first Summer Streets series, which created a 6.9 mile car-free stretch of Manhattan pavement on three Saturdays in August, will return, despite heated objections from some merchants who said the closings hurt their businesses. Today Russell Simmons and Luis Guzmán joined Mayor Bloomberg, DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan, and other officials to formally announce this year's events, which will take place in Manhattan on Saturday August 8th, 15th and 22nd from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Manhattan route will run from the Brooklyn Bridge via Lafayette/Centre Streets, 4th Avenue and Park Avenue up to 72nd street, while major cross-town streets will remain open to vehicles crossing the route. In addition, the Summer Streets program is being expanded to all five boroughs, with smaller stretches in a total of 13 neighborhoods. One such micro-version of Summer Streets, Williamsburg Walks, is already underway and will continue next Saturday and July 11th, unless the teenagers ruin everything with their skateboards! A full list of all the neighborhood Summer Streets events can be perused here, along with all the other free activities presented by the city.

I can't wait until "Winter Sidewalks" when they let trucks and cars on the sidewalk.

I found this amazing for sundays on Park Ave... just give the city a totally different feeling.

Is Russell going to give some of that Def Jam money to merchants who lost money because of this setup? Didn't think so.

Would be nice if it were all day. Ending at 1pm on a Saturday? That's still mid-morning in my book.

Please just keep the people on bikes separate from the people on foot. Thank you.

That was just about the only problem last year (that wasn't invented by the New York Post.)

Because there were so many people, bikes and peds were getting in each other's way due to lack of clear "rules of the road". I guess they didn't expect the event to be this popular and successful.

Hopefully DOT and Parks has figured something out.

"thefacts" must be seething right now, screaming and ranting about "Diktator Khan" to anyone within earshot.

Will Luis Guzmán be on hand during those days to threaten children the way his character always seem to be doing in his movies?

Can they also make a separate lane for those crazy bikers who think they're so cool for zipping by regular bikers and clipping people?

Temporary speed bumps. That's all they need. Or better yet, a few bike cops chasing down offenders and handing out tickets. That's not a bad idea anyway, since you don't want cruisers or even motor scooters in case there are other emergencies on the closed-off street.

Speed bumps isn't a bad idea, but I like the ticketing idea better. The speed limit in Manhattan is 30, let the cops practice on bikers during Summer Streets (just to introduce the concept), then this fall, they can start ticketing cars for speeding (in my dreams!)

Has anyone noticed that the Dekalb And Flatbush Bike Parking Shelter still has the ads for the old Summer Streets. Oh well can't wait! Hope it expands!
