With monsoon season seemingly on the wane, it's high time we welcomed P.S. 1's annual summertime Young Architects Program, wherein the Long Island City museum invites a design team to transform their giant courtyard into... whatever. This year's project, by the firm MOS, is drolly dubbed Afterparty, a sly nod to P.S. 1's popular afternoon "Warm-Up" music series.
The installation was open to the public for the first time on Sunday, and when glimpsed from outside the courtyard wall, it suggests something out of the 1968 movie Planet of the Apes. But a rep from P.S. 1 assures us that no humans or animals were hurt or enslaved to make the towering, hut-like structures: "For all you animal lovers out there, the material is an organic fiber made from palm thatch trees." MOS promises that their "urban shelters" will draw cool air "from the thermal mass of the courtyard's shaded concrete walls, and concrete water troughs located in the center of the structure will be drawn up through a series of cooling chimneys by induction."
The summer's first Warm Up party kicks off next Saturday with Reagenz featuring Jonah Sharp (Spacetime Continuum) & Move D (extended live set), and a DJ set by Daniel Bell a.k.a DBX. (We don't know who any of these people are, but our friend who follows DJs is always, uh, raving about Warm Up, so enjoy.) It costs $10, tickets are available in advance, and L.I.C. residents receive complementary admission plus one guest. Beer and wine cost extra, but the cooling chimneys are free.

that pool gimmick is stolen from the kanazawa museum of art (a very nice building), designed by SANAA who did the atrocity on bowery called the new museum. as for the fur looking garbaggio, this is probably PS1's worst yet in a line of trash

I've always supported PS1 but feel they dropped the ball in 09'. Other entries on display at MoMA were superior, surprised they picked this entry. This doesn't look functional or interactive, wtf?!
