Off-Duty Corrections Officer Fatally Shot In Brooklyn

2009_06_nostrand.jpg Early Sunday morning, an off-duty state correction officer was killed after being shot multiple times on Nostrand Avenue in Crown Heights. The NY Times reports that the victim, Jeremie Kane, had "left Millie’s Head 2 Toes barbershop... just before 1 a.m., the police said. Mr. Kane stepped outside the barbershop to make a call on his cellphone when he got into a dispute with another man, who then shot him." According to the Daily News, Kane was shot twice in the head and four times in the chest—"Investigators were not certain what prompted the deadly shooting and have not ruled out that it was a robbery attempt." Kane, 30, was assigned to Ossining "Sing Sing" Prison, but was released on workers comp leave last month and had been staying with his mother in Brooklyn. The Times saw his aunt visit the site where Kane was killed and a small memorial had been placed; she sobbed, "Oh, my God, the blood’s still here."

I heard these shots from my bedroom. I remember just four, but perhaps I was mistaken.

Murders happen all the time, but there's something about hearing the fatal shots echo through your home and the cries of someone telling him to hold on to his life that haunts me.

I wish men would learn hiding behind guns is the coward's way through conflict...

    Simply tragic.

didn't astor place haircutters open late?

I'd still don't want to hang out at a barber shop though.

all that hair, dandruff flakes is too gross for me.

"Kane was shot twice in the head and four times in the chest—"

    Seems like an execution.

Actually it seems the shooter was using a six shot revolver and just ran out of bullets. It could have been a lot worse if he was using a semi-auto with 8 or more shots in the clip.

Getting a haircut at 12:30 early Sunday morning does seem a bit strange. Plus the guy was a Sing Sing guard on leave. Could it be that someone was out to get him?

Sounds like a quick group to center mass for the takedown, with two pops to the head for the sendoff. Random seems kinda doubtful.

    What's the problem?

NY is a 24 hour city the last time I checked.

There are plenty of places around the city where you can eat, read, get a haircut, etc... Hood or no hood.

"Investigators were not certain what prompted the deadly shooting" There was a dispute. Don't disputes ALWAYS prompt deadly shootings?

Sheesh, what's wrong with people? Is a gun really the only way to settle things?

What I like to know is what kind of "barber shop" is open at 12 midnight on a Sunday/Monday. I guess there are LOTS of men it the area just get a hankering for a haircut at 12A.M. I mean that's what I feel like doing at the dead of night is get a hair cut. Why not?

  • Brooklynbobby

What barbershop is open at 1:00am? Sounds like they're doing more than cutting hair there.

All grooming establishments serve double duty as social clubs, at least all the decent ones.

  • hotstepper

totally. "Millie’s Head 2 Toes" pretty much explains it all. crotch shampoo anyone?

but was released workers comp leave last month

Oh reading that hurt my head.

  • mmlanglie

Me too! You can spot a Chung-penned article from a mile away...

  • You guys are real clever.

  • mmlanglie

I'm just sayin'. No offense or anything, but its true.

  • whitecastlerock

After clicking on the links and reading the article, there isn't a description of the shooter anywhere. The barber shop was open-no one saw anything?
