Subway, Bus Fare Hike Goes Into Effect Sunday

It's fare hike time! On Sunday, June 28, the fare hikes for NYC Transit subway and bus —plus MTA Bus, Long Island Bus, and Staten Island Railway (details)—commuters go up to the not-doomsday new fares. Above are the new prices; the MTA will automatically deduct the higher fare from pay-per-ride MetroCards starting at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday. As for the unlimited MetroCards, it's a little more complicated—here's what the MTA says:

MetroCard Vending Machines and station attendants will sell Unlimited Ride MetroCards at the current prices until midnight on Saturday, June 27. After midnight you will be able to purchase Unlimited Ride cards at the new, higher prices.

To get the full value of a 1-Day, 7-Day, 14-Day or 30-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard or the 7-day Express Bus Plus MetroCard purchased prior to June 28, you must begin using the card on or before July 6.

The chart shows when your Unlimited Ride MetroCard will expire. Regardless of the printed expiration date or date of first use, the MetroCard will expire on these dates.

Unlimited MetroCards must be used by July 6 in order to get the full value.

In other words, you have until tomorrow to use buy Unlimited cards and until July 6 to use them to get the full value. Unused or partially used Metrocards can be returned to the MTA for a pro-rated refund. More details here.

Thanks for this. Very useful to know!

F*#@ the MTA. Im getting a bike

So the MTA suddenly needs to borrow $600 million because the state aid isn't coming until the end of the year. For this, they get to pay interest. Instead, why not allow MTA riders to lend the money-- let them stockpile unlimited monthly passes at the current rate, thus advancing the MTA cash while providing riders with the capital to pre-pay for metrocards the benefit of a discount?

That monthly expiration is such a cockblock! WTF man

Every other company tries to cut prices in a recession. The competition-less, graft-filled MTA hikes them.

All they know how to do is hike the prices. It's simple and easy to do.

damn, so what is the use of buying a new monthly card if it will expired on the 6th. MTA fucks us but not Bruce Ratner.

How much will the express bus cost?
