9/11 Families: Supressed Documents Detail Saudi-Terror Link

Thousands of pages of previously undisclosed documents compiled by lawyers for 9/11 victims' families probably won't be admissible in court. But they were passed along to the NY Times, which reports that they show Saudi "support for terrorist organizations" at least through 2006. Some documents, obtained from the Treasury Department through the Freedom of Information Act, include sworn statements from various witnesses detailing the transfer of millions of dollars from prominent Saudi charities to Al Qaeda and other extremist groups. At least one charity is controlled by members of the royal family, and another witness said in a sworn statement that he witnessed an emissary for a leading Saudi prince, Turki al-Faisal, hand a check for one billion Saudi riyals (now worth about $267 million) to a top Taliban leader in '98. The Justice Department, which recently urged the Supreme Court not to hear a lawsuit brought by families against the Saudi royal family, is now fighting to keep other leaked classified documents from surfacing in court.

BS - what the saudis see as charity, they claim are terrorist orginzations - if not christian or zionist its a terrorist. wake up america

yeah, there is most certainly NO money being funneled to terrorist organizations through fake charities. none whatsoever i tell ya. screw those christians and jews. yeah!

I don't understand. Why is this not being investigated to the fullest extent possible? And why is it non-admissable in court?

That is why this is being released by the lawyers to the media. It has little, if any, legal weight.
Its being tried in the court of public opinion.
The documents provide no smoking gun connecting the royal family to the events of Sept. 11, 2001. And the broader links rely at times on a circumstantial, connect-the-dots approach to tie together Saudi princes, Middle Eastern charities, suspicious transactions and terrorist groups.

This is appalling yet not surprising. It bothers me that there's nothing this country is willing to do about it, but the fact of the matter is that we need their oil (this coming from someone who doesn't drive a car).

The government's willingness to ignore reality is disturbing, but what bothers me even more is that the so called "patriotic" element of this country is too caught up in its right to bear arms to be concerned with what could really stop the Saudis: Americans banding together to demand alternative energy sources. As long as people need large SUVs to satiate their egos, reality will continue to be ignored in the name of fueling up.

Imagine a tough guy driving an electric car that hums instead of roars. Exactly, that will never happen and the numerous amounts of assholes in this country are too proud to prevent us from destroying ourselves (by directly funding terrorists) as well as our planet as a whole.

I hope this didn't sound too righteous, as I am a modern man who needs to consume energy and is not a PhD with all the solutions, but it's pretty obvious that 100 years of internal combustion engines means something better should have come along by now if people were willing to embrace a different attitude and approach.

Spot on. My greatest wish is to be able to see the US' dependence on foreign oil reduced to nil in my lifetime so we can flip one big bird to the House of Saud. Probably not going to happen though. Maybe in my son's lifetime.

well put. let's not forget however, that oil is not merely used for tough right-wing guys in mustangs. it heats our homes and buildings, it is used to create much of our consumer goods, it is the fuel that allows farmers to grow and transport immense amounts of food. electric/hybrid technology is not the solution as long as we get most of our electricity from coal-fired plants.

also the fact remains that most of our oil comes from Canada and Mexico, not the Saudis.

Some data: We import 64% of our oil. ~8% of imports are from SA (4th largest), ~10% from Mexico (2nd), and ~20% from Canada (1st). (Venezuela is 3rd)

We actually import more Saudi money than oil. Through their direct investments in US businesses and real estate, and through their purchases of Treasury notes. We obviously don't want to piss off our best customers, but seriously, what would the British do if they learned that members of the Royal Family were bankrolling the IRA?

Follow the money, it probably ends up under a Bush.

Who do you agree with again? I can't figure it out.

Gothamist's IT has always sucked

Well, there are actually two issues—our software and how the servers allow the software to run. We moved to new servers last month and are still chasing one remaining—but very annoying bug that might be related to this.

I've only had one double post since I started posting and I think it's because I close the window within five seconds of hitting submit whether it's done loading or not; when I return to the page, my post always shows up, once. I think the submit button tries to send the post every few seconds until the loading is done, if the loading takes more than a few seconds you end up with double posts... If this post ends up double posting I will look like a real idiot.

Yes, you idiot. I didn't do that on purpose. Either the websit or my phone (or both) were acting up.

Er, the rest of us don't seem to be having this problem so I'm going to go out on a limb and say that posting on your iPhone or whatever is the culprit.

Oh, and hey, I appreciate you calling me an idiot for an obviously sarcastic reply on your triple posting! Let's be BFF and get gelato later!
