Giuliani Calls For NY State Constitutional Convention

2009_06_giulianit.jpg Former mayor Rudy Giuliani has penned an op-ed in the NY Times, offering his suggestion to fix the State Senate mess: "I’m calling on Albany to convene a state constitutional convention... [It] would be an extraordinary step, but it is a necessary and effective way to overcome the challenges we face. It would be an opportunity for Republicans, Democrats and independents to come together, take a long hard look at our problems and then propose real, lasting solutions. If the State Legislature were to approve the measure in the next few weeks, New Yorkers could vote on whether to proceed with a constitutional convention this November. A 'yes' vote would move the process forward, allowing voters to choose a slate of delegates in November 2010. After the convention took place, the recommendations would be put forward to the people for an up-and-down vote." And then Giuliani lays out his suggestions for term limits, budget practices, and judicial pay.

Turdberg and Slush Queen Quinn overturn term limits against the people's will. Whoiliani needs to crawl back under his rock, All I hear from him is 9/11 and yet the towers are NOT yet built. What a disgrace Dicktator Bloomberg.

So the way to keep state lawmakers from breaking the rules is to change the rules?
Thanks Rudy. Remind me again why you no longer hold public office?

AAHHHHHH! I can see where he is going with this. Someone wants to put the "guber" back in gubernatorial.

I hope Cuomo is ready to take him down.

Rudy, thanks for your concern. Now, back into the crypt you go.

You douchetards are so indoctrinated you don't see why this would be the best thing to happen to ny politics since the end of tammany hall. this is the only chance for secession. now go back to ohio!

We all know New York State government is a junior high school and has been that way for decades, but nothing is ever done to fix it besides talk about the problems.

Politicians act all nice when they're not elected, once they get elected it's time to start thinking about myself and not the people.

Giuliani's a colossal jackass and I'd never vote for him for anything, but if you read the editorial, his proposals aren't bad. The only one that is unabashedly stupid is the supermajority for tax increases - every state that implemented that has come to regret it. Term limits are questionable. The rest of it was pretty sound.

This obviously a transparent plug for a 2010 gubernatorial run, of course. And I seriously doubt he would do any of it were he elected governor - but that doesn't make him wrong.

So let's convene a convention to fix all Albany's problems and invite, guess who? The same people that are Albany's problem to do the job. Forget it. (but if Giuliani would like to be the Mayor of Albany, I got no quarrel...)

I call for Giuliani to shut the hell up.

i call for him to shut the fuck up

Did any of the knee-jerk Giuliani bashers actually read what he proposes? It would be hard for anyone to argue against most of these ideas. The question is there any way the criminals in Albany make it happen?

Ghouliani is full of shit, he talks about term limits but he supported Bloomberg overturning term limits without public referendum. Guiliani can kiss my bootie as in the CK ad.

"The question is there any way the criminals in Albany make it happen?"

And that's exactly why, whether the specific proposals he writes about are valid or not, suggesting a constitutional convention to deal with this is nothing but grandstanding.

Many of those kinds of things could be done without a convention. Why would the same people be expected to move in a different direction simply by putting them into a different format?

I wouldn't vote for him but he makes good points. The Democrats (like Smith) may screw this up so badly that Rudy will be able to pitch himself as a reformer of Albany.

We are a long way from the election and there is a huge budget deficit that will need to be addressed. Given the mess in Albany, voters may feel like they want to kick everyone out (including Andrew).

BTW, if you actually read the piece you will see that he was careful to not mention any "social" issues. It makes his proposal look even more smart.
