Bloomberg Seeks Big Changes To City's Homeless Policies

The number of families sleeping in shelters is near an all-time high; according to the Department of Homeless Services, there were 34,774 people in shelters last week, including 9,361 families. The Bloomberg administration is now seeking state approval for a new set of policies intended to move families out of shelters more quickly and, according to the Times, apply the "market-driven, incentive-based philosophy to homeless shelters that it has used in schools." Under the new rules, the city would pay shelters more than the usual rate, which is roughly $100 a day, for the first six months that it houses a family. But after six months, if the family has not found permanent housing, the shelter would be paid 20 percent less than the standard rate. Homeless advocates deem the new policies "mean-spirited" and worry that families would be forced out after six months. But Linda Gibbs, deputy mayor for health and human services, insists families would only be ejected for "refusing to look for housing, refusing to seek employment, anything that is an unreasonable refusal to participate in the steps they need to take to overcome their homelessness." In April, homeless advocates blamed Bloomberg for the rise in homeless families.

Does this surprise anyone? I am sure if Bloomberg could that he would gassed the homelessness as he gassed the geese. It is all Connected

bloomturd's pocket change could prevent these families from being homeless. I hope his daughter is doing well in her equestrian pursuits.

Excuse me Jack, but Georgina Bloomberg is doing her part in helping the poor and unfortunate by donating her riding clothes to needy people who need riding clothes. What are you doing to help. Ya, I figure. http://gothamist.com/2009/06/07/extra_extra_1268.php

Yes, if you didn't catch it that was sarcasm.

"Let them wear riding clothes", off with Bloomberg's head or gas him.

I believe those riding clothes are being donated to the NYCHA Polo Grounds Tower Houses.

Am I the only one who does not think this is a terrible idea?

it is terrible because Doucheberg wants them to find jobs within 6 months when professional college educated people can't find jobs in this economy.

There are jobs out there. And if you're living off our taxes you should not have to be forced to look. Taking a handout should be the LAST option, which is what these steps ensures.

New Yorkers are still losing jobs at a fast pace as the city's economy continues to trail the nation through the recession. The city's unemployment rate jumped to 9 percent in May, its highest level in more than a decade

And there are still jobs out there. And no excuse for taking handouts, rich or poor, if you're able to do otherwise.

Christine Quinn needs to stop living off those slush funds and stop bailing out rich developers such as Bruce Ratner. They are the ones living off our taxes

rich developers are living off our taxes. don't believe otherwise, they get more benefits than these homeless and it doesn't have a time limit.
it goes on and on.

It isn't like they have to load the wagon for a 2 month trip across the country, fuck this isn't the 1800's.

Amen! There are jobs in this country. There is no goddamn obligation to live here. MOVE to where there may be an opportunity for affordable housing and jobs. Stop looking for a fucking handout. Why the hell anyone would want to live on the dole in public housing or the shelter system baffles me. This country is HUGE. If you can't find jobs or housing, move-like regular folk would.

wrong person my comment was meant for whitecastlerock

Nope. I don't think it's a horrible idea at all. Nowhere does it say people have to get a job in 6 months, but that they need to be seeking a job. Ergo, if there are no jobs to be had, you won't get kicked out. But if you sit on your ass and don't try, you're in trouble. I'm totally fine with that.

They should enact the same policy for the projects.

Where is all the outrage of all the BILLIONS that Doucheberg and Slush fund Queen Quinn doles out??? Human nature is so strange. All this outrage that people are living in shelters (which is horrible place to be) instead of living on the streets. I visited the shelters for seniors in Chelsea and it made me cry to see elderly ladies under curfew and living in such squalid conditions. Heartless mean people

Dumbing of America, WAKE up people. Bloomberg plays with numbers but people aren't numbers. He created charter schools and lower standards to improve passing rates but in reality he only made the problem worst. Most of the graduates need remedial classes and those who didn't passed were reclassified as "transfers". Now that his administration put many people unto the streets with their rezoning, Bloomberg wants to drive them out of they city or kill them to improve the "homeless" numbers. Bloomberg is evil and he has some of us peasants supporting him. What do I expect when poor people are volunteering for his campaign. Dumb ass people

Can someone clarify what services a homeless shelter provides other than a bed and a bathroom? $100 a day seems like an extraordinary amount.
