Nassau Police Seek Mother Of Day-Old Abandoned Baby

2009_06_babyabn.jpg On Sunday night, a man returning to his Hempstead, Long Island apartment building found a newborn baby in the lobby. According to Newsday, the baby was swaddled in a blanket and left in a shoebox, "She appeared to be less than a day old, police said, her umbilical cord tied off with dental floss, her skin light in color." A building resident said, "She was big and full, with chubby cheeks. Poor thing, she didn't have a diaper and she was all wet." Nassau County Det. Lt. Raymond Cote said, "We'd like to reach out to [the mother] and find out her motive, what the problem was that caused her to take such a drastic action to abandon her young child in the doorway of an apartment building at night." While the mother will face child abandonment charges, a police technician told the Daily News, "She must have been concerned about this child. [The baby] was left to be found. She was prepared properly." NY State has a Safe Haven law which allows parents of unwanted newborns to leave babies at safe places, such as hospitals, police stations and firehouses, without facing prosecution.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but at LEAST the baby was left in the lobby of an apartment building, rather than by the roadside or in a dumpster, like other stories I've seen recently.

I'm always baffled by adults who don't leave babies at hospitals or churches under the Safe Haven law. You don't want your baby? Fine. But don't you at least want it to be cared for?

If it's an awareness issue of the "Safe Haven" law, then maybe that's what the city should spend money and create a campaign around, rather than goddamn "Give up your seat" campaigns on the subway.

It sounds like this mother may not have known about the safe haven law. If she were leaving the child to die why would she put the box in a warm, visible place, somewhere she would definetely be found alive?

That's a great point. If we're going to throw marketing money around, this is something at which it should be thrown. Get all the baby mommas informed such that they can, uh, do the right thing.

"She must have been concerned about this child. [The baby] was left to be found. She was prepared properly."

What?!! Are you serious? That is definately NOT what you do with a newborn. If this piece of shit gave a damn she could have brought the baby to any number of hospitals where at least it would be warm and fed, not abandoned like a piece of garbage in a lobby where it could be several hours before anyone might find the baby.

I seriously hope that they don't allow this "mother" to take the baby back. Most people wouldn't do this to a dog.

I assure you many people would do much worse to dogs - trust me, I work in rescue.

In any case, what usually happened in situations like this is that the mother is a. totally uneducated, b. isolated socially i.e. she is an illegal immigrant or some such, and c. had no idea about the safe haven law, or no way to transport her baby to a safe haven. You really think a foreigner in New York, who doesn't speak English, would think to take her baby to a hospital to leave it? She probably had no idea. It could even be a case of someone, like her father or the baby's father, forcibly taking the baby from her. If she didn't care about the baby she would have left it in the dumpster or by the side of the road, or just flat out killed it.

relax...the baby will be fine folks. kids practically raise themselves these days, what with a little wii and some totino's pizza rolls it's smooth sailing.

Maybe not the best momma, but exhibits good dental hygiene. "I don't have any condoms, but I've got floss."

Maybe Madonna will rescue this poor child

Precisely. The old bitch has to go half way around the world to "rescue" some "orphan"? She could put the kid through college with the money she would save on airfare alone.

I doubt "Madge" flies coach.

No wonder the old hag wears gloves. It's to hide her eighty year old looking hands.

Maybe Madonna can adopt me too :)
