Bernard Madoff's Lawyer Suggests 12-Year Sentence

2009_06_madvic.jpg Sure, multi-billion dollar Ponzi scheme mastermind Bernard Madoff knew what he was doing was wrong, but he really doesn't want to face up to 150 years in prison. Today, Ira Sorkin, a lawyer for the 71-year-old disgraced financier, told U.S. District Judge Denny that a 12-year sentence would be sufficient, noting that Madoff's life expectancy is only another 12.6 years and that Madoff "will speak to the shame he has felt and to the pain he has caused." Sorkin added, "The significant anger and resentment evidence in the victims' words is no doubt justified in light of the circumstances of this case. Thankfully, none of the fury expressed in the victim statements has been as shocking as the death threats and anti-Semitic e-mails that have been directed toward Mr. Madoff and his counsel." Chin is scheduled to sentence Madoff next Monday,

Ira Sorkin you make total sense. Give the thieving prick life plus 12 years. The sentences to run consecutively. And as an added bonus through his wife into the same cell.

"throw" not through you idiot

is there a special Rabbi at MCC who would make sure everything he get's is Kosher.

HA! Sorkin's got the balls the size of a cave troll for suggesting a sentence like that with a straight face.

The judge should allow it, provided that after 12.6 years, Madoff is put to sleep per his estimated life expectancy.

12.6 years is a generous estimate considering how many people are likely to be willing and able to have the guy taken out.

Estimated life expectancy
Since many of his victims were Jewish, I have to wonder if some of the "anti-Semitic e-mails" are from pissed Jews, but artfully interpreted by his lawyers.

12 years no chance at parole sound OK. But 12 years with 8 taken off for good behavior is not.

Maddoff trying to pull another sham when he knows the odds are that he will live longer than 12.6 years.

12 years for each investor sounds better.

You guys are all being too hard on the fellow. 150 years is way too long a sentence. I'd be satisfied with 40.

the real issue is that his sentence will be set as a bar for those who conspired with him and others who engage in such schemes. So 150 years would be a good precedence to set,

Obviously, I was saying they should show a little mercy because of his advanced age. We as a society can afford to be merciful. To a point. That's why 40 rather than 12. As long as he has no chance of surviving it.

ima drink some manishevitz, and pee on him.

This guy steals millions from other people and ruins lives (elderly retirees, nonprofits, down the his own staff--I'm sure there's a few if not many who didn't know what was going on). He thinks 12.5 years is "sufficient"? A little perspective--homemaker Martha got five months for selling off her stock.

Martha did time for the cover-up. Had she come foward and claimed it was a simple mistake and donated all profits to orphans, she never would have served time nor have a felony conviction on her record.

Maddoff did not come forward, he ran this scheme for over a decade but his scheme collapse when he couldn't pay out the redemptions.

Yup. They both lied. Maddoff's punishment should be more along the lines of f-cat's suggestion (=12.5 X #investors) than just 12.5 years, or even try six months per investor and see what number you arrive at.

And A-G, right on. Definitely the lawyer's jockeying for sympathy. As if you take someone's livelihood away and expect to be sent flowers and words of encouragement.

I wasn't comparing the crimes and what Martha did isn't any sort of basis to decide Bernie's jail time. She committed a victimless crime and he left more victims than a drug gang.

Madoff wouldn't be alive on the streets if he got out. There are too many people who want to see him dead.

I think that's fair.

12 Years for every person he scammed. Lets pick a round number of 1,000 people (which is well under the actual number of people scammed) and tack on 12 years per person.

A sentence of 12,000 years behind bars is fitting.

YOU people and all of you that say the man manipulated and lost billions are being way too hard on the guy. 60 billion dollars ain't like it use to be.

I would suggest sentencing him for just one dollar that he lost for one second of the the 60 billion he lost. He would get out in the year 3909. Maybe a day or two earlier if he was on good behavior.

His wife would probably need new glasses and a face lift by then.

Don't believe the hype.

His counsel told me that they expect him to die in jail.
They are hoping for minimum security instead of medium.

Put him in Medium Security and throw away the KEY!

PS. what is his wife up too? is anyone following her around trying to figure out how she's still any money left to live on? (arrest her too)

Sentence him to 50 billion years and allow him a year off for each dollar he returns to his victims.
