Last Night's Action: Losses And A Draw

  • Tampa Bay 3 Mets 1: Johan Santana was good, James Shields was better. Shields shut the Mets down, allowing only one run over seven innings and the Rays came from behind to beat New York in a tidy game. Neither offense was good, but Tampa was more efficient, taking advantage of two solo homers and back-to-back doubles to get the win. Both teams had to suffer through a lengthy rain delay, but the game itself took only 2:24.

  • Florida 2 Yankees 1: Johnny Damon made a huge error and the Yankees couldn’t recover. Losing 1-0, Damon dropped a catchable ball in left that led to a crucial run. New York came close to tying the game, but couldn’t overcome that mistake. In the ninth, Mark Texeira started the inning with a single, but Jorge Posada popped up and Robinson Cano hit into a double play to end the game.

  • Red Bulls 1 Seattle 1: They didn’t lose! Yes, New York had a 1-0 lead, but they didn’t give up anything more than the tying goal. That’s progress for the Red Bulls.

You know what I've noticed? You two only lead with the Mets when they lose. Never when the Yankees win, and usually only when they both lose.

I really do pity Santana. He's not perfect, no, but he'll never have the numbers he should if he continues to be saddled by the poor offense his team provides.
