East Village Residents Mourn Loss Of Neighborhood Cat

2009_06_prettyboy.jpg The Big Apple isn't always hard-hearted—witness these sweet tributes to Pretty Boy, an East Village cat who passed away last month at the suspected age of 22 (!!). He traveled between Mikey's Pet Shop, where he slept, and Salon Seven, where, the NY Times reports, he "spent his day purring, sprawled on the appointment calendar at the reception desk and in the laps of clients having their hair washed." Salon Seven's Mark Dolengawski told the Villager that neighborhood supers loved Pretty Boy, one even wished "I had a cool walk like that." Dolgengawski added, "It really was a cool walk...it was a Zen-like stroll. It was so serene. I like to think of him as my sensei — my Zen master. I hope to be as cool and serene as that when I get old." And Living in Narnia wrote last month, "Mikey told me that Pretty Boy wanted to hold on until Tuesday, when Mark returned to the salon, and so he did. He died in Mark's arms...Rest in peace, Pretty Boy. The East Village lost a good friend. " A former Mikey's Pet Shop employee told the Times, "Every day I cry. He knew he was the man. He was the man on East Seventh Street. Everybody just loved him."

i never knew him, but this cat clearly rocks.

RIP Pretty Boy.

Shout out to Romeo, the cat that watched over Othello's Deli in Astoria. Romeo also had a cool swagger. His appearance a bit scruffy led me to refer to him as the Old Battle Axe. He got hit by a car about a month ago.

RIP Pretty Boy and Romeo!

Reminds me of Fluffy, the HUGE cat that lived in the pet shop on 7th Avenue in Park Slope. He was a great, ginormous cat. He passed away years ago, but I still peek at his memorial portrait in the shop every time I walk past.

The two cats at the copy shop on 7th Avenue are quite awesome and alive.

Did the Key Lime Pie guys ever recover their missing dog? That story really sucked.

twenty-two years is a long life for a cat. i'll be damn lucky if my little guy lives that long.

i'd like to send out a casey's top 40 long distance dedication to pretty boy, the kinks 'phenomenal cat.'

and you better not lead in with a goddam up-tempo record!

What's sweet and heartbreaking is how this little 6-year-old girl in the neighborhood was really upset by Pretty Boy's death. She had dressed up as Pretty Boy for Halloween. Apparently she's been bringing in tulips to the salon—and she was crying during her kindergarten graduation rehearsal.

they should name a street or park after him... or perhaps a sandbox.
