While it's not the level of iNsanity the initial iPhone release prompted two years ago, people did/are lining up for the new iPhone 3G. Engadget reports, "A few hundred people lined up outside the Fifth Avenue Apple Store today for Apple's new iPhone, with the those The iLife guys up front descending into the store at 7AM to the sound of applause from the cheery horde of Apple Store employees. It was a far sight from the mayhem of previous launches -- the whole line was able to be contained in the elevated portion to the right of the store, no sidewalk necessary -- but it was still a fairly impressive turnout for a spec-bumped phone and a rainy night." And the line outside the Soho store doesn't look too bad either. But iPhone consumers, be careful: Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has previously attributed the rise in young muggers on the shiny device!

Yeah, maybe the lack of a line is because noone has any goddamn money to spend on a gadget that will be updated in 18 months.
I mean, a compass? That's a feature Apple's touting? NY to Steve Jobs: F U. Make some real technological strides between releases and maybe people besides the nerdsheep will buy your crap.
I don't know what's funnier: that you don't understand the opportunities for major software innovations that this minor hardware innovation brings, or that you imagine you are speaking for the entire New York.
Steve?
Also, it was updated in 11 months, and it will probably be again. The real reason many people are not buying this one is that if you bought the previous one, AT&T will make you wait at least 18 months before they allow discounting on the account of a 24 month contract to kick in.
11 months...even worse. Please do enlighten me on the "major software innovations" this version will bring different from the version released eleven months ago.
Here you go. This is on Android, but it shows what a compass can do:

Yes, a compass. So maps can turn around as you turn in different directions. And video capture in the camera. And touch selection of the autofocus, which some professional photographers are saying is ingenious and will be quickly adopted by pro DSLRs. Quite a few more features which you'd know if you didn't have a knee-jerk hater's reaction to Apple products.
Don't be so bitter. The "nerdsheep" are buying iPhones just fine. The relative lack of a line may have something to do with the fact that an awful lot of people already have iPhones, not to mention AT&T's refusal to give iPhone 3G buyers a discount on the 3G [S].
Fact is, if the iPhone 3G [S] is nothing special, what does that make the Palm Pre, which is being clobbered by the iPhone? Or the Blackberry, which a Bloomberg article said is taking a huge hit from the iPhone? Palm is pretty much finished. They have a solid phone, but they needed a home run to survive, and they're only making it to second or maybe third base.
Ha, nice assumption that I'm a Apple hater. while I don't lick the wrinkled sac of Jobs as many here all seem to do, anxiously awaiting with cupped hands every product that falls out of the the company's R&D anus, I do have three generations of Ipods sitting in my house.
And the links that were provided don't show much "app innovation" in my opinion, but I guess to some, anything can be justified to be an early adopter.
Better copying and pasting? Be still my heart! LOL.
ROFL
Insult Jebus in South Carolina and you'll get a less heated response.
Nice try. No, correction -- a terrible try. Just because I can actually read Apple's product page rather than just bragging that you know almost nothing about the 3G [S] doesn't mean I buy all of Apple's products. Three iPods. Wow. Why did you ever buy the things, knowing they get updated every year? And everybody who knows anything doesn't have to be told that the iPhone has been updated like clockwork every June since it was introduced.
Yeah, I sure am an Apple fanboy who kisses the feet of Lord Jobs. Must be why I replaced most of my Macs with my own handbuilt Hackintoshes.
Here's a good article:

Not really. Landscape emailing, yay!
Landscape emailing comes with 3.0 software that works on older models too. A fact not supporting my point on #GS, but showing you don't even know what you are talking about.
3GS has data transfer rate twice as fast as 3G. I'd say that's pretty useful.
A friend got mugged for hers a couple days ago. Just like the iPod a few years ago.
Also contributing to the lack of a line: the ability to pre-order online and get one in the mail on launch day.
The pre-orders are the real reason for the short lines. Initial sales of the 3G S are expected to exceed those of the 3G.
"with the those The iLife guys..."
That made my brain hurt to read.
Most of the new features comes from the OS 3.0 software update. the new iphone has longer battery life and faster speed.
Same lousy call quality.
Its probably ATT's lousy service.
The poor reception and dropped calls problems are not unique to iPhone users in the United States so it has to be more than the phone network.
you just contradicted yourself. as you often do.
Try to follow along here: if iPhones purchased in different countries and running on a different networks (i.e. not just AT&T) experience the same problems it is probable that the problem lies with the phone, not in the network.
Now would you care to explain how I contradicted myself or are you just going to continue being, how should I put this in terms you're familiar with, a piece of shit?
You know, people get really defensive about spending money they know really could have been better spent.
I don't have an iPhone. I need to know that there isn't a twenty percent chance my call is going to be dropped.
There are quite a few more features. See the comparison chart. Since the old iPhone 3G also gets the 3.0 upgrade, any feature it doesn't have in the chart is due to hardware, not software. That includes the improved camera, video, compass and voice control.
Ahhh Old Muggers. I do remember those days. That was when you could simply give up a couple of coupons for a 2 for 1 early bird dinner ......and they would wheel themselves away happy as an old clam.
Ah well. That's life I guess. All you can do now is punch the little bastards.
Just got my new phone and I am very happy to have 32 gigs of memory as opposed to 8 (1st Gen)
Making music on this thing is a little more pheasable now.
My 1st gen was stolen on the train and I still miss it even though my new iphone is lighter and has more memory.
Why are people so retard?
Variety is the spice of life Steven. Enjoy it.
I had HUGE problems just buying a replacement iPhone 3G on the day of the 3GS launch. I decided it would be fun to camp out (since I didn’t work that Friday) and join those waiting for the new phone. I was third in line from 1:30am!
Opening time comes and as they are taking down reservations, several Apple Store employees told me I would be able to actually get the 3GS for $199 – all I had to do was tell them inside.
But the Apple Store employees quoted me an incorrect price on the new 3GS (even after looking up my account info), locked me out of my AT&T account because of too many attempted registrations, and the best part is this faux 3GS they were going to sell me wasn’t even allowable since the quantity in the store needed to match those for the reservations. Bait and switch tactics—just get the customer in the door, tell them whatever and then spring a $400 surprise on them.
I’m very disappointed in my customer service experience at the SoHo Apple store, and heading to an AT&T store I was able to buy another 3G and get my life back in order. I’m going to be in communication with both companies to talk about my experience since this shouldn't happen to anyone else.
