Last Night's Action: Upside Down

  • Nationals 3, Yankees 2: Chien-Ming Wang pitched as if he belonged in the Major Leagues, but the Yankees' batters didn't. They got shut down by John Lannan -- of Long Beach and Chaminade High School fame -- and fell when Robinson Cano grounded into a double play to end the game with the tying run on third. Cano and Johnny Damon went deep, but those were the only two runs the Yankees scored. Wang, whose wife had a baby Tuesday, pitched five innings, allowing three runs and striking out four. He should live to see another start, but that was the Nationals' seventh road win this season
  • Orioles 6, Mets 4: Aren't teams like the Orioles the ones that are supposed to throw out starters like Tim Redding? Apparently not. Redding allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings, and the Mets' rallies from 3-1 and 4-2 deficits were for naught when future Met Aubrey Huff homered off Pedro Feliciano. The Mets try to avoid dropping a series to the American League East's worst team on Thursday night.

wang looked good. while it's petty to blame the ump for the third run, and while they should have tied it (at least) despite the ump, the safe call at first when the guy was obviously out by half a step was garbage, and without the safe call obviously the guy would not have scored the third run...there's a margin for error, but this call exceeded that margin by quite a bit. still, ramiro should have held onto the goddamn ball and still, cano or arod should have been able to hit a goddamn sac fly to tie it. still, the huge positive is that wang looked good.

Red Sox won last night, too!

I'd be curious to know how many times in the last couple weeks the Mets have had RISP or, worse, bases loaded and failed to execute. Tatis' DP is just awful.
