Iranian Election Protests Hit Union Square

061809iranprotest.jpg Hundreds of demonstrators, alerted through Facebook and Twitter, gathered for a rally in Union Square last night in solidarity with Iranian opposition groups who have been protesting the results of last week's presidential election. According to this video, the peaceful rally seems to have gone off without incident, unlike in Iran, where some demonstrators have been beaten and killed after taking to the streets. Today in south Tehran, an estimated one million Iranians are marching to protest the election, which handed victory to incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Iran's authoritative Guardian Council has now offered to meet with reformist candidate Mir Hussein Moussavi, as well as the two other main opposition candidates, but it's unclear whether that overture will placate the increasingly enraged protesters. Here in New York, rally organizer Amid Amidi told Voice of America, "They are out there now fighting for democracy and reform, and I just want to say that people here in New York hear you. We hear your struggle and we are 100 percent behind you."

Nice to see a rally in the NYU vicinity actually accomplish something.

and what exactly did it accomplish?

honestly, i'd rather see a few spoiled kids lock themselves in a cafeteria, showing their boobs and repeating chants they might not understand, for nothing more than a tuition freeze and legal immunity, than hundreds of people actually trying to make a real difference.

what an idiotic comment, what did this accomplish other than conveying a sentiment? a sentiment that expresses solidarity with a nation rebelling against the forces of control in their society but expressed in way that AFFIRMS those same forces in our own by not offering any challenge of the NYPD's control of the event (not allowing amplified sound, for instance) or any number of instances in our own country that restricts the masses authority over their own lives. the NYU occupation, valid criticisms aside, made such a challenge and thus "accomplished" the conveyance of the revolutionary sentiment far better.

Jeeze...relax! Some people gathered and expressed an idea without all hell breaking loose. That's it. I don't care what their political stand is so long as it's a peaceful gathering. Man...

Yeah, Moussavi is a liberal reformer in Iran --- he wants to kill all the Jews, but not with a nuclear weapon, just missiles from Hezbollah.

As long as the Mullah went along with the plan.

conventional weapons are better for future real estate values.

The protesters in Tehran got way ahead of themselves. Did they want a full recount? New elections? The overthrow of Khameni? Or the full overthrow of the Islamic republic? Unless they figure it out, it ain't a revolution.

such bs - which country, israel or Iran, was OPENLY threatening the other - ISRAEL....its incredible somehow its always about 'they want to kill the jews' when really its israel threatening to bomb its neighbors and when they feel like it, lebannon, gaza, syria, they do...and wonder why people dont like them.

WOW, I wish I was surprised that there are people like "resist" who ignore the facts, who spread lies, hatred, and overall total BS. You have, on one hand, palestinians who refused to share the land and have two countries in 1948, who left so that when all the arab nations attacked Israel on day 1, they'd be able to come back after and takeover, but it didn't work out that way. Israel won and began building a real civilized country that has contributed in so many amazing ways, science, medicine, arts, communications/technology, etc.
So since the arabs didn't like Jews living near them, they chose a path of suicide bombings, rocket attacks, numerous hijackings, kidnappings, etc. and then people like you cry and whine when Israel defends itself, or carries out precision strikes to minimize civilian casualties, and alerts everyone to evacuate with leaflets, etc., and strikes overnight to reduce casualties. This is why you think "people don't like Jews" but really, it's because of lying assholes like you who twist the truthful reality into your pile of shit propaganda.

shmuck, no one has ever heard Israel make any comments about any nation the way ahmedinejad does about "wiping Israel off the map".
You say Israel bombs neighbors when they feel like it? They bomb to prevent imminent attacks on them. you worthless twat racist.

It's terrific how there's no historical evidence to support your position, schmuck.

All I can think of is how in the 70s we had photocopies of Mickey Mouse giving the finger and the words "Hey Iran" taped to the rear windows of our cars.

I don't see how saying "Arabs are filthy villains" is any less racist than what the other guy was saying. It's not as though the Haganah politely asked Palestinians to vacate their homes. Please don't take a one sided issue on a really fucked up, violent issue.

You want a history lesson? OK, that's right. The Haganah didn't ask politely because they were mainly farmers who were too busy defending Jewish Kibbutzim and helping the British defend against roving arab raiders and in WWII before the British decided not to try and allow survivors to immigrate to the British mandate, and then turning on other more militant Jewish groups (the Irgun and the Lehi) to finally seek to end the British Mandate of Palestine to create 2 nations for 2 local peoples. Guess what happened? The palestinian arabs refused to share the land with the palestinian Jews, and when Israel was officially founded, not one, not two, but five arab nations attacked at once (Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria).
This IS a fucked up, violent issue, but one side is notoriously violent and shows little regard for human life all too often.
