Espada: Give Me Two Votes, So I Can Break Senate Ties

2009_06_espadahl.jpg State Senator Pedro Espada Jr. is sending shivers down the spine of New Yorkers today, with his solution to break the State Senate tie. Espada told the Post, "I can have two votes. We're going to maintain that, as the president pro tempore of the Senate, I am also the acting lieutenant governor, and the lieutenant governor can vote when there's a tie." Hey, is he suggesting that because he was elected to represent the Bronx, but really (allegedly) spends his time living in Westchester?! Democrat-appointed policy adviser and Counsel to the New York State Senate Michael Kink, though, Twittered, "Justice McNamara's decision explicitly says he's not deciding who is the NY Senate Temporary President -- it's up to the Senate to negotiate." At any rate, why we have a 62-member Senate was explored by Newsday's Dan Janison: Maybe-majority leader Dean "Skelos [R-Long Island] in 2002 discovered that a 62-seat redistricting scheme would work best for his party," and managed to create a district in Brooklyn that got Republican Martin Golden elected.

Um, can we please just arrest the dude right now and end this absurdity.
Its funny how in this country illicit sex gets people calling for your head on a stake but blatant corruption barely raises eyebrows.

Thank you!!

He's like one of those prick characters you see in movies.

I was watching the coverage last night on one of the cable channels dedicated to NY and several things jumped out at me: Espada is truly scum, Monseratte is truly unfit as a leader, politician, and generally any sort of public figure, and lastly - and most importantly - Golisano is wholly unapologetic and even giddy about his thinly veiled purchase of the NYS Senate.

Great photo and what an incredible Jackass that man is...

Can he be impeached already?

It seems to me that kicking this windbag out of office would also break the Senate tie.

I think that anytime the NY State Senate is mentioned the word FAIL should follow

Bloomberg caused this problem because he campaiged and raised funds for the republican senate candidates since he didn't want a one party system in the state. Now look at this mess. Put Espada in jail and ship him back to the Banana Republic and put king Bloomberg dreams of a 3rd term to sleep.

To the folks in Queens: If you don't vote this jackass out in the next election, you deserve all the ire we can direct at your borough, and more.

he is fronm the Bronx and he ran against Gonzalez who was federally indicted. These Democratic clubs are at fault especially the working family party. don't support the working family party aka acorn,

ease off queens, holmes. this greaseball ain't one of ours. blame him on the boogie down.

Freudian slip. I know Queens and the Bronx are completely different, although they're both northern boroughs. Bronx streets aren't nearly impossible to navigate like Queens, with their insane numbering scheme. But in some part of my mind, those two boroughs are almost interchangeable in that they're not quite as good as Manhattan or Brooklyn, but better than Staten Island. No offense.

It's an ethnic thing and these guys wont be voted out of office.

He needs to change the spelling of his last name to "ASSHOLE!"
He embodies everything that is wrong with politics and why people tend to hate and not trust politicians.
I say put him in the public stockade in the town square for some good old-fashioned stoning!

Other considerations aside.. the two vote idea does seem to be supported by the law.

I don't understand the judge who says that the Senate has to work it out among themselves.

Isn't there some law somewhere that says who gets to break ties when the Senate is evenly split and the Lt. Gov. slot is vacant?

Can't our blind asshole governor appoint a Lt. Governor?

I almost expect the politicians to be morons but what's wrong with this judge?

why didn't Paterson appoint a Lt. Governor? Is Patterson also too busy with his blackberry?

I wouldn't give him two fives for a ten

Hey,

They seem pretty distracted up in Albany.

Now may be the time to secede, they'll never notice until the tax money stops!

here's a fun idea:

let's see what happens when we switch all of the politicians in new york state with all of the politicians in iran for one week. we'll video tape the whole thing, lay down some michael mcdonald tracks for background music, and we'll put it on mtv for the kids.

we'll call it some catchy name that everybody likes and we can get advertisement sponsors like loreal cosmetics or nickelodeon gak. oh wait nickelodeon stopped making gak i think. it might have been unsafe to eat. i might need to get my stomach pumped.

Note to whoever robbed him - PLEASE RELEASE ALL DOCUMENTS - send this man to jail for the next 10 years!!!!!

Gov. Patterson please look into this for us. [get the pun there?!] uggggg I'm actually starting to be sad for this state's government - but happy that city government works so well.

I read with great interest yesterday the NY Times article about Robert Bowman who was denied admission to the NYS Bar because of alleged debts exceeding $400,000. I suggest that if debt can be a rationale for denying admission to the bar that the behavior of those NYS Senators who are also lawyers is incompatible the ethical standards required for the privilege of practicing law. Therefore, as a citizen of the state of New York, I demand that the NYS Bar association revoke the membership of Dean Skelos, Malcolm Smith as well as each and every other NYS Senator, who is currently a member of the bar.
