Queens Woman Arrested After Baby In Her Care Drowns

2009_06_kah.jpg A Queens woman who ran a day care operation out of her home was arrested for child endangerment after an 11-month-old boy died in her care. The Post reports, "James Farrior was in the living room of caretaker Kristal Khan's home in Ozone Park with her two children, ages 3 and 4, at about 11 a.m. when the sitter went into another room...When she returned, she found James head-first in the bucket, which was three-quarters full." A neighbor told the NY Times, "A fireman was running down the street with a baby in his arms. The baby was totally limp and just hanging. Right away I knew the baby was in trouble." While Khan did not have a license to run a day care operation, the Times explains "the state requires day care providers to be licensed if they have more than two children — not counting their own — in their care for three or more hours a day on a regular basis." The ME's office is conducting an autopsy today. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has warned that drowning dangers to children are not limited to pools but also include buckets, toilets, fish tanks and more.

Isn't James Farrior a former NY Jets (Current Steelers) Linebacker?

There's no pithy remark for this story: it's a tragedy.

Who the hell turns their back (even for a moment) on an 11-month old. Lock those lazy women up!

I meant woman. Lock this lazy-ass woman up. If she has children of her own, take them away. They aren't safe. It takes a responsible adult to care for a child.

This is a tragedy and I feel for the family. But this woman should be in prison for negligent homicide. Baby care 101: no buckets near infants. Khan completely failed and her negligence led to an infants death, completely avoidable if Khan wasn't a fool.

When I baby-sat, one mother told me NEVER to leave her child unsupervised near water because kids can drown in as little as 2 inches of water. Those words have stuck with me since.

It is hard work caring for an infant. You can never leave them alone. Maybe she thought the 3- and 4-year old would watch the baby. Some women think like that but it's so wrong.

When my babies were little, I never left them with any sitters because I thought, This is so hard for me to do, how is someone who doesn't love them going to do it right?

I second the 2nd part of your post wholeheartedly. I really don't understand those who delegate the duty. I really don't. When you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself.

I can only hope this is just sarcasm gone bad. Because a sanctimonious, passive aggressive mommy wars dig when commenting on the tragic death of a child is just heinous.

"A neighbor told the NY Times, "A fireman was running down the street with a baby in his arms. The baby was totally limp and just hanging. Right away I knew the baby was in trouble.""

You think? Man, the city should hire this person as a police detective, he'll solve all the cold cases.

This is such a sad story. This is why I refuse to leave my 1 and 3 year old under the care of ANYONE. I think this child's life could have been saved if the mother could have afforded to put her child in a Legal daycare which isn't in-home, and is child proof. It's sad that she chose to leave her son in an unsafe environment because they charged less. We as mothers and fathers need to do our homework before finding a babysitter or daycare. We need to make sure the place is child proof 100% and warn the caregiver of things like this... Or maybe just not have kids if you can't take care of them yourself or afford to put them in a safe place with a trustworthy person. These are just a few words that were on my mind. I hope those of you with children or planning to have children, see this and remember it the next time you decide to leave your child or children with someone.
