Humane Society's Objections To NYC Plan To Get Rid Of Geese

The Humane Society of the United States has weighed in on New York City's—and the Port Authority's—plan to cull/kill/gas 2,000 geese. The city perceives the geese as a threat to airline safety, given that geese took down US Airways Flight 1549 (Mayor Bloomberg reiterated on his radio show, "We're trying to strike a balance. In the safety of flying, the public trumps the rights of the geese"), but the Humane Society says, "The best and most lasting solution to secure the safety of air travelers as well as preserve wildlife is to reduce the attractiveness of airport-vicinity open space to animals such as waterfowl and to limit access to other creatures."

Additionally, the Humane Society explains, "Canada geese, in particular, can be successfully managed with nonlethal techniques including hazing, aversive conditioning, egg addling and landscape management"—scarecrows and balloons help scare geese—"In short, geese are not attracted to places that are not attractive - and that simple approach should guide airport area managers. Such an approach was proposed for New York City and unfortunately rejected."

It also turns out that the geese that hit Flight 1549 were migratory birds—which means that killing geese that nest in NYC parks and near airports might not necessarily solve anything. There's a petition to stop NYC's goose-gassing plan.

Details, details. Wouldn't want this to get into the way of a Bloomberg rant.

Retarded. The geese of 1549 were coming from Canada at a very high altitude. Killing geese that live in Prospect Park = safety!

How do you know they were coming from Canada? Where were they going? Did they have Canadian tags or license plates on them?

The geese in question were liquefied. Did someone do a DNA scan search on the turbine blades to see from what province of Canada they came from?

The biggest problem is that a large amount of geese don't go south anymore. Some might, but a lot of them have adapted to our climate. Probably because there are few large predators around that could pop them off for a Christmas or New Year feast.

Not liquified—their feathers were in tact. Scientists were able to test the feathers. From the AP:

But it was the Field [Museum]'s collection of 2,700 samples of Canada geese — including some that migrated from the eastern Canada region of Labrador — that was the key to cracking the case.

Field ornithologists sent Labrador goose feathers and tissue to the Smithsonian, where tests showed the birds to blame for the US Airways accident were the Labrador type — not New York varieties that largely stay put year-round on the city's waterways.

The clincher was a test in which Smithsonian scientists tested stable hydrogen isotope values in feathers — telltale markers that indicate where vegetation eaten by the birds grew. Migrating Labrador geese have eaten grass from different areas than the stay-at-home New Yorkers, and that showed up in the tests.

Thanks Jen.

I realize that feathers don't liquefy because when I run over the goose feathers with my lawn mower, running at full tilt, all they do is get a little scuffed.

"The clincher was a test in which Smithsonian scientists tested stable hydrogen isotope values in feathers." Only in America could so much scientific talent be put to the test. Well that convinces me. I must apologize for my original thought that they were native New Yorkers. But the question remains, "Where were they going that late in the year?" Were any relatives found and questioned? Isotopialy speaking that is.

These very well may be the Canadian terrorists Janet Napolitano was talking about.

Their Loonies do go further south of the border...

What strawman do you expect to be introduced to this time?

There's this really cool strawman that works over at the stables where they keep the Central Park carriage horses. I'm waiting for him to give me an update.

Then again, judging by your name, you are not suggesting the Chinese Americans solve this problem are you?

I don't know man, boiled goose feet are known delicacies in the far east. I say let the Chinese have at them.

Since we've elimated all of the natural predators of the geese (foxes, skunks, weasels, etc) what is supposed to be keeping their population under control?

finally, someone's doing something about goose-shit on public fields. you know, children can contract diseases from it

the mayor comments on this but nothing on the preferential treatment jewish inmates get in city jails. oh yeah, he say oy vey. funny mr. mayor, you're a funny guy.

Uhh he did comment on that, actually.

won't someone please think of the pâté!?!

Thanks for raising awareness on this issue. First of all, technology exists so that birds in flight can be avoided...that so-called bird-detecting radar. Yes, it works great, but its expensive to purchase, maintain and operate. The City, PA and FAA figure its easier to kill a few thousand geese (not even a fraction of the total tri-state area population), than to upgrade. If anyone knows specifics of the culling, email me at yojimbot at gmail dot com.

The Port Authority is installing bird radar at area airports at an expense of several million dollars. It is hardly fool proof...it is in the control tower so pilots do not know about the birds in real time.

What we need is some kind of computer-controlled weapon system onboard these flights that can slice through the errant flock.

You have to be nuts. Do you realize how many years passed by before the numb nut fucks in the airline industry realized that oh perhaps a skyjacker might take over the cabin? Duh?

KILL GEESE NOW!

"Yes, it works great, but its expensive to purchase, maintain and operate."

That's what I have been saying for the last few days.

Geese are not rare! Whether they be Canadian, French Canadian, New Foundland, Nova Scotian, Labrodorian, New Yorkian, or whatever geese. The menace is not rare.

What next? Save the pigeons?

How about taking out a lot of these ornithological pests so the average person doesn't have to spend thousands to go to Disney World?

Save the Geese

Oh by the way when you are flittering around the Port Authority headquarters in dire protest about the potential death of 2000 geese can you ask them when they will finish their building project at ground zero?

I looked at them RE wards and they came out allnice and stuff. I thoughts they would have given a better looking plaque and all, but that's real nice them people all are rewarded up. Looks good in the den right above the mini fridge.

Hears hoping all them people keep givin thier all.

Felix you are so incredible that the intelligent beings that exist here on the Gothamist blog have awarded you a yellow ribbon. So it's not first place or second place but it's a solid third place showing. Of course there were only two contestants, but you did great in the animal horse/ geese/ tuna fish / pigeon category.

Moving on in your career. What do you see in your future? Fish Fowl hairy mammals tell us please. Don't tell me it's 14 year old boys please.

I have on the last few days reported this ... help me here - I can't find a word that describes this individual who constantly babbles on about nothing. But I have reported this ... again in simple terms I would call him an imbecile and a retard and an asshole, but I wont. How can Gothamist eliminate a childish fool that goes on and on about something that many other esteemed Gothamist people have realized that the retard needs help.

I have reported to the "report this" "button" and it appears it does nothing. Can someone "upstairs" at the office control center of Gothamist tell me how do I rid myself of this total stuck in the mud idiot?

"Canadians don't kill geese at all," says John Hadidian, Ph.D., the director of the HSUS Urban Wildlife Program. "On the Toronto waterfront, they round them up and take them out to the country." And, throughout the U.S., Hadidian says, there are cities and towns that have found alternative methods for goose population control.

One of the oldest and most successful programs is in the Detroit area. The Humane Society of the U.S., the Detroit Zoo, and the Michigan Humane Society all worked together to create a successful egg addling program

I would really like to see you addling goose eggs. You would probably shit in your pants and cry, MAMA!" the first time a male goose approached you.

A hole, if your account was suspended why are you flapping your lips?

Are you finished?

Somehow I think we are dealing once again with "him".

"to wipe the tears from his vagina" says it all. There is professional help out there for individuals that know the difference from him and her.

Snoopy, I am not felixthecat you nitwit but look at how many ignorant lame comments that you have posted on this site. It is you that adds no value to this site and it is you that is so pathetic to spend so much time to promote animal cruelty. You are a prime example of what is wrong with this world. You life must be so empty and so miserable for you to spend so much time here.

Jeez, long day at work, stretch out & actually read a book, get up, wonder what's doing, log on, and find this dreck. This place is rapidly becoming useless, even for entertainment value. As the shops are not yet closed, in honor of Felix and his doppleganger, gonna saute up some veal & top it off with some pate and a nice bottle of wine. Those of us will real jobs won't be available to protest either way in the middle of a workday afternoon. And Felix/SSA, those of us who know vaginas again object to your negative connotations. Won't bother coming back to feed the troll(s). Gonna eat some tasty dead animal parts, go back to reading, and rest up for a busy day of employment tomorrow. Hope you kids don't get up over 100 posts tonight with useless BS.

No way will the posts get up over 100 tonight. I'm just finishing a nice filet mignon kebab with a blue fin tuna salad and goose pate dinner and I am ready to haul in.

Catch you tomorrow my man.

Are you going to be at the Shake Shack in Madison Square and pick up on those delicious range fed Buffalo burgers?

Newsflash, no wonder gives a damn what you did today.

Newflash, no one gives a damn what you did today. You try too hard and fail so miserably.

Reply to yourself? How can one do that?

I mean I realize it can be done and how it's done, but why would a person do that? It's kind of like those mumblers you see in the subway I guess.

Three cheers for the Humane Society. But killing is such a quick fix. And the next flock or generation of Canada Geese that decide to make the ideal JFK marshland a resting spot will be destroyed, and so on......

I am a huge animal lover, more so than anyone I know. However, since we have killed ALL of thier natural enemies and protected them under federal law, their populations have exploded. Something needs to be done, dogs and repelants only move them somewhere else. If the answer to an overpopulation of deer is to allow more hunting than the same goes for geese. Where were the animal activists when their natural preditors were killed? I find it funny that after humans screwed up the balance of nature the ignorant find bitty for the large populations that we are responsible for. Geese are noisy and unsafe and unsanitary in large numbers. I say kill them and give them to the poor and homeless, but thier population must be reduced.

kill the geese save the peeps

Bird control 101 says killing the resident geese will do not good as other geese will just take up residence in their place. The proper way to do it is to get serious about bird control at airports devoting more personnel, control and technical resources (proven bird radar systems used by NASA and USAF). We treat bird control at airports in the US like a research program instead of a end-result oriented commercial business like they do in Europe.
